Slow System

I have a Vista Laptop with better specs than an old XP PC. Even after I re loaded the set up disks created when I first bought it ( A Toshiba) It always seems to churn away and it is a lot slower at just about everything than the XP PC.
So much so that I am considering dumping Vista and load XP. I Formatted the 120 gig drive prior to re loading the system back to factory standard. This did not seem to help. Any clues appreciated. I have even tried dumping a lot of the programs that load on start up and any that seem to be using processor time.

Wow! I tried some of these steps but only a couple of the well known ones not being a Vista expert. I think that is why my XP PC is faster it is lean and mean.
Programming is a hobby of mine, one that started back in the 80's when I was sat in front of a 286 and told to turn it into a real time production tester for an Electric Motor manufacturer. With a laptop I can hammer away whilst watching TV and supposedly listening to the wife.

Thank you for your reply and help.

Without knowing your Toshiba specs, it is hard to say (RAM, CPU, HDD). My guess would be that most of the loafing comes from the HDD. It is probably a 5400 RPM unit which is slow in nature. That is why I put SSDs into all my systems including our laptops. That makes a world of difference.

As a fun test I suggest you make an image of your current Vista (or make an extra partition) and load the free Windows 8 test system (which works very well). Take the 32bit version: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516

Thanks for that. downloading now, probably take a couple of hours. We do not have the super fast Broadband in our neck of the woods yet here where I live in Australia.

I guess I can try out my programs in the operating system. Luckily they run in all other Windows OS's. I will try and install in a usb Seagate drive. Not solid state but pretty fast and quite large 1 terabyte. Wonder how long it can be used for. I will worry about installing it when I get it down loaded

How much ram do you have? That is an important factor. For Vista and 7 I recommend at least 2 gb.

Well My Broadband is too slow. Downloading nearly 2GB is not a possibility I gave up. But the good news I followed the tutorial and it has improved the speed. I have Intel® Core™ i5 processor 2410M (2.30/2.90GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache).

I have removed a lot of unnecessary bloatware. It will do for now.
Thanks

Too nad you have such a slow line. But looking at your CPU, it should be performing adequately. You probably also have 4GBs of RAM. So the only possible bottleneck left is the HDD.

Cleaning up the system is a good exercise. But do not expect wonders from it. The best performance you still get with raw muscle.
