can only see BOOTSECT.BAK - Virus?

I think I have a virus, but unknown. I have combatted different virus before, but always had a name to go on.

I have Vista 64, was working fine and then I got some error messages and a window that "looked like" a system message saying I had various problems and to click link to get full version to fix. I knew it was not a system window, just trying to look like it.

Anyway, reboots result in C:/drive only showing BOOTSECT.BAK and there is nothing in my programs or quickstart menu and no profile. Nothing except systray icons.

Anyway, I can type computer in search and see the C:/drive. (VISTA Installed there). If I right click and scan it scans all the folders but I can,t see them so have no access to any programs.

I have managed to run MSCONFIG and cleaned all stuff from start menu etc and booted to SAFEMODE and run MALWARE (IOBIT) and WINDOWS DEFENDER. Cleaned anything I found but same issue.

Do I need a format and reinstall? Or anyone seen this before?

Many thanks. PS - I have searched and can't find what I am looking for.

Hi - thanks for the fast reply. I am currently re-running a deep scan in safe mode and it looks like it is going to be about an hour and a half. I am in UK, so will let it run and go to bed!

Anyway, I will try that tomoorw if I can get IE to run...I am using laptop for this.

Will post back and let you know how I get on.

K, notice in my malwarebytes link, you have instructions of how to get it to run, Mbam is very good and you need to use this, Please do what is needed to get a full scan of mbam in normal mode.

I have managed to download the program by tryping the name of an app that opens in IE in the "Start Search" prompt. Then using IE to go to the page detailed above.

However, after downloading I can't run set up to completion. It all looks like it is working and then as the green progress bar seems to be coming to the end it goes red and I get error message

"Accesss Denied".

I am following install instructions exactly and installing to default location (c:/).

I have tried installing on a NAS and get same result.

I have downloaded the program twice.

I also have the same problem in SAFE MODE. :(

I decided to try a system restore, but without any way to browse files I can't seem to find it. If I type Sytem Restore on the Search prompt it opens the window described above that tries to get me to buy a product to fix my PC and I cannot close that window once opened.

If I type computer and go to control panal I can;t see it there - and all of the links:

Remote Settings, System Protection and Advanced System Settings take me to the same menu which doesn't have it either.

Also - I press CTRL+ALT+DEL there is no task manager to kill apps.

Managed to get MalwareBytes to run from USB, will post back with results.

EDIT:

Malware results:

Found 8 infected files including:

PUM.hijack.taskmanager

PUM.hijack.start menu

Removed both but it hasn't fixed the problem! :(

EDIT 2:

Have doen a system restore to a few days ago and I still get the same problem.

I can't browse files or pragrams and C:/drive (cound by easrching for computer) shows only BOOTSECT.BAK, even though I know there is stuff in there as programs are there but invisible

I have manged to get somethings back through IOBIT tools. But nothing is visible in My Docs or anywhere. It appears that every single folder than can be hidden has been. Also can't see andthing in start menu....

Starting to think a re-install...

System Restore is not going to fix this, in that link i gave you for How to use Malwarebytes, notice the Rkill links and info. RKill will stop the process allowing you to get Malwarbytes to run. We really need to get in normal mode to be most effective .
I just did some research on the Bootsect.Bak and i found this : Bootsect.bak and boot.bak are backup files from the previous xp bootloader.
They aren't neededed for Vista, and they can be safely deleted.
So , this brings up a question for you . Did you upgrade from XP to Vista ? Do you have the Vista dvd , we may have to do a clean/repair install if so. I am leaning towards a clean reinstall of your Vista OS mainly because of you somehow getting ahold of malware/viruses.
