Use recovery DVD's to install OS onto a new HDD

Not sure whether I can and/or may use recovery DVD's to install OS onto a new HDD.
Searched this forum a few times for a guidance. But uncertain still.

Desktop machine with Windows Vista Home Premium installed by OEM, purchased approximately two and a half years ago.
Recovery function built in.

In addition, recovery DVD's were burnt right after the purchase of the machine.
These discs have been actually used four times.

A little bit of unpleasant noice from the HDD is recently noticeable sometimes.
I intend to buy a new HDD and have the OS installed or transferred onto it by my recovery DVD's .
This leads to my questions:

1. Is this legitimate?
2. Any side-effects and/or after-effects?

Thanks!

Welcome
A recovery DVD can legitimately be used on the same computer with a new HD. It cannot be used on another computer. Another computer is defined as a computer with a different MotherBoard.
There should not be any after effects other than those experienced when you reinstalled on prior ocassions.
As a side note, you may want to consider buying the upgrade Version of Seven. The cost will be about $125.00. Although an unwanted expense, you will get a new Operating System that will be supported much longer than Vista, better security, more features and the most current system out there. I had Vista and now Seven and would never go back.

I have made back ups for just that reason, if my hard drive fails. Of course i hand wrote down my numbers for my OS as far as product ID , registration type stuff , and if my drive fails , i fully intend to install my copy of my OS onto a new hard drive , as that is the purpose of having them.
I believe the only issue would be if you were to have more than one copy of the OS active. You can only have one active OS , so, that would be , to my knowledge the only issue.
So, do what you have to do to keep your OS that you paid for active and on a working hard drive is what i say, Good luck on the install.

As I said it can be used on only one computer.

Mr. Richc46

I, too, thought it was legitimate since the new HD was intended to replace the old one.
But was not sure. So I contacted the manufacturer in writings. All I got back was a NO!NO! That was why I came to search this forum and posted the thread.

Is it possible that there is something of the legality which the manufacturer knows but we do not?

Thanks!

Mr. Yard Dog

Thanks for reminding me to keep a set of the important numbers and initials.
But it puzzles. Why does one need the these numbers and/or registration since it is a
"RECOVERY" back to the out of factory state or conditions?

Would you please share a little bit more on this?

Thanks!

As Rich has said, you may put the OS on the HD as it is the same computer. Ignore what the manufacturer has said.
