fresh install of windows, went fine except i can't put laptop to sleep

i had to do a fresh install of windows, and i downloaded all the latest drivers from the acer web site, and i can hear sounds from it, and watch videos on it, and all the colours look the way they did before i had the problems that forced me to start everything over again .. everything seems to be the way it should be, except that the thing to put my computer to sleep only shows up in grey and can't be clicked, all i can do is shut down and lock (and the others, except sleep) .. .. in device manager, it has a little yellow triangle telling me something's wrong with the display adaptor driver i got from the acer site, and inside, in properties, it says this:

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

but there were also green tick marks next to all the files when i looked at them, which i always understand to mean 'everything's working fine with this'.. i'm not very good with computers, as you can probably tell by the way i talk about them, so i don't know what my computer's confused about (somebody told me i got driver files for windows 7, but that doesn't sound right, the readme file said vista), and was wondering if anybody on this site could give me some help and/or advice .. thanks very much in advance

How much space is left on the drive?

Vista keeps a copy of the old instal under windows.old, so if youyre sure you have all your files from your profile, you might want to remove it.

hi
check your video. card drivers in order to enable sleep option in your comp else it wont work.

if the drivers are failing try windows update or check your windows.old folder for them. Also ensure you backup your drivers with driver backup application before doin fresh installation.

good luck

Tim.

either i don't know where windows.old is or i don't have one.. i think i don't have one, because this hard drive is a different one from the one that came with my laptop.. and unfortunately i couldn't back anything up from my old hard drive because at the end of its life it went into perpetual loops, and i'm told that that means that it's irreperable .. .. all drivers are fine, except video card one (i mean i only see one yellow warning triangle in device manager), and even tho it's the latest one (which i know because i've clicked 'update driver' dozens of times, expecting a different result every time haha) it keeps telling me it's having a code 12 problem, details of which are in the first post.. .. i suppose that's basically what i'm asking, what's a code 12 problem, why are my driver files fighting for working space, and how do i fix this?

You only have 9Gig left on the drive? How big is it? Not that it matters, I'm just curious.

As you said it's a fresh drive, yhawindows.old won't exist... You might find install files but I don't think that'll make much of a difference.

Is this a SSD? I've read some folks have sleep issues with them.
If so, try updating the firmware, theres been alot of bugs in them being fixed all the time.

Code 12 is generic issue code, as far as i understand

By sata i guess you mean a standard harddrive.

I'd look if your new harddrive has a firmware that you can upgrade too.

yea, that, sata is what the guy who gave it to me called it .. .. and do you mean upgrading bios? that's what my brother recommended i do (but i don't know how, but never mind, i'll find out if it's necessary).. .. and after looking up code 12 in various places, the most common advice i found was that i should look for a button that says troubleshoot, and i've been told that it's in my driver's properties dialogue box, but all i see there is 'check for solutions', and all that does is tell me that it can't check for solutions.. .. so how do i troubleshoot so i can find out which device my video card is conflicting with?

me again, still haven't managed to figure out how to sort this and when i asked yahoo answers somebody linked me back to here .. .. as far as i know, what i need to do is go 'troubleshoot', and that would show me where the conflict is and then i can do what needs doing from there, but there's no troubleshoot button anywhere .. but, presumably, if there's a button for that then there should be somewhere that that button would go, and there might be another way to see it .. is there, and how else can i see whatever it is that shows me what i need to see?
