something went haywire after I did a firefox security update on my pc with vista home premium. now I can't get beyond my welcome page

firefox version is 7.0.1 I believe. I'm on compaq presario c700...2 gigs ram upgradable to 4.. the pc is 32 bit..little over 3 yrs old.
benn having start up problems..I have to punch F8 key, the see if pc will self repair..that worked ok until recently.
One other thing..system restore only seems to go back to Nov 22 or 21..can't put in my own date.hell, if i could I'd like to take her back a year!
also my avast is not working..can't fix in safe mode which I'm in now
