To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
How to Tell - Home

If you can't access the desktop....

If you do not have access to the Start Button:
1) Login to Vista and click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.
2) Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.
3) A window will come up asking if you want to “Run” or “Save”, Select “Run”
4) When the program runs, click the “Continue” button, then click the “Copy” button (IGNORE any error messages at this point).
5) Return to this thread
6) In a reply post, paste the Diagnostic Report (by right-click select Paste or by using Ctrl+V)

It's likely that this problem is caused by your Anti-Virus - have you recently installed or updated it?

Go to the computer Icon on the desktop, right click. Go to properties, do you see the Microsoft emblem in the lower left. Let us know your next action depends upon what you find there.

So is the messege saying the copy of vista is not genuine?
No - what it's saying is that it can't stisfy itself that the installation is genuine :)
Subtle difference, but a vital one.
Please provide the MGADiag report - and then we'll see what Windows' view of itself in the mirror is.

I have no access to computer at present. Owner clicked link but was wary of a pottential virus warning. He did send me a pic of his screen...

After another chat I have been told... After the first messege It takes you to a link to the valadation web page. He then told me he can not get any further on that page. He reboots..Vista shuts down in 30 sec ish.. The vista takes 4 mins to fire up and then every thing works normally.

Let me guess - He's using some over-hyped AV Suite like Norton?
Remove that and install a more sensible one, and most of his problems will disappear.

Avast free I think. Have just read there is a problem with Avast. I will get him to remove and apply updates.

Avast shouldn't be warning of a virus on the MGADiag download - it certainly never has for me.
There may be a warning (from IE/Windows) because it's an executable file, but that's all.

Iwould suspect that Avast was installed (and updated to v6) before SP2 was installed - this frequently breaks validation, and is fixed by uninstalling Avast, updating to SP2, and reinstalling Avast.
I would usggest that in this case, uninstalling Avast, validating Windows (at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate) , and then reinstalling Avast should clear the problem.
