Problem getting exe files to run

Both wife and my brother-in-law recently came across the "system fix" spyware on their respective computers (she's running Vista, he's running Win7). I've been able to seemingly remove the software using the instructions here: How to remove System Fix virus | My Anti Spyware

My brother-in-law's computer is now running just as it was before. My wife's computer however seems to be still having problems. It will not open either Internet Explorer or Firefox. It also will not recognize any external hard drive / flash drive.

Anytime I try to run IE, I get an error message saying the program has stopped working correctly. Anytime I try to run Firefox, I get the same message, plus a pop-up bubble saying that Data Execution Prevention has closed the program. The computer will not let me disable DEP for Firefox. Additionally, anytime I try to run an ***.exe (where *** is the name of the program), I receive a message saying that ***.exe has stopped working.

If anybody has a solution to this problem, it would be well appreciated.

I would just boot to safe mode and do a system restore.

Sounds like a good idea...I went to try that but it appears that the spyware has hidden the "system restore" from the typical file path (can't get the unhide utility for this virus to run given the ***.exe errors). Can you provide a back path to get to the system restore?

When I want to run the system restore, I go to safe mode and, when the help file comes up, I just scroll down to the section on something like "What is system restore" which has a link to system restore. Of course it always takes about 5-10 minutes for system restore to actually display. I apologize for not taking the plunge and going to safe mode and getting more precise instructions.

If System Restore does not work, please try the following, BUT be Advised, any mistakes after using System Restore could cause you to have to reinstall the operating system as System Restore was never meant to be used in Malware Removal

Please Download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, or MBAM, and save it to your Desktop:

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe
    rlBZo.jpg
and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
  • Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • If it asks for a Restart DO SO, Very Important
Please copy and paste the log in your next reply

Download DDS and save it to your desktop
Disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.
Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.
Then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, the DDS.txt file will open.
Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your new topic that you will create: DDS.txt and Attach.txt
  • YOu may attach these 2 logs

LOgs to reply with:

  • Mbam Log (Copy & Paste)
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt

I ask Admin/MOds to move this thread to the System Security Forum so it can be handled properly
