C:\Windows\System32\igfxres.dll problem

Hello....I'm a senior and quite new to computers. I am looking for someone who is very patient and can help me with this problem.
When I boot up my Toshiba with Vista, I get the following pop message which I must "x" out 4 times before it disappears.
hkcmd.exe - Bad Image
C:\Windows\System32\igfxres.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original
installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
Could someone please instuct me step by step as to how I get rid of this??? Thanks so much in advance for your kindness.

Hello dllfb and welcome to the forums

As well as doing Bill's (Yard Dog) excellent advice, can you please fill out your System Specs. Use Speccy if you don't know any of them:

Speccy - System Information - Free Download

This sounds very much like a driver error, so let's try reinstalling the Intel Chipset driver, I'll find the right one for you once you've filled out your system specs. Otherwise I don't know which download link to go for :)

No problem, it's my pleasure.

Well that is a heck of a lot of information! But thanks, I managed to find what I needed :)

Try using this utility to check if you're running the latest drivers:

Yes , please. anytime a quick scan finds threats. it is best to full scan , as the quick scan does not scan all files. thanks for posting back. Tom is an excellent helper here. Glad that worked out for you.

Excellent. glad to see clean log. Tom got your driver for you. So. just 2 things left for you to do. clean temp files out and make a new restore point to have if you have future issues. You can use ccleaner or TFC by oldtimers on the temp file cleaning. Here are links : CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download and TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums
After you do those. do this : System Restore

To manually create a new Restore Point
  • Go to Control Panel and select System and Maintenance
  • Select System
  • On the left select Advance System Settings and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create
Now we can purge the infected ones
  • Go back to the System and Maintenance page
  • Select Performance Information and Tools
  • On the left select Open Disk Cleanup
  • Select Files from all users and accept the warning if you get one
  • In the drop down box select your main drive i.e. C
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete
You are now done

Sometimes system restore points can be infected, and by using them now thatyour system is clean, you will only infect yourself again and bring us back to square one. So let's get rid of them and start over

Don't worry dllfb, you're not infected :) We recycle old posts and sometimes they aren't for the exact same problem. But please make sure you follow these steps, it'll save us both a lot of time should you ever have another problem!

Sorry about the issue with the serial key in the Speccy log, I had no idea that that was in it!

Thanks so much gentlemen for helping me. Personally I'm in awe that I fixed this
myself instead of paying 150 bucks for doing something similar on my son's computer a month ago. I really appreciate it! One more question...what should I run on a regular basis (and how oftern) to keep my computer up to par....ie these two last items you had me run? Thanks again.:)

You're most welcome, I'm sure I share Bill's (Yard Dog) views when I say that the pleasure is all ours.

Just stay away from registry scanners/defraggers and you'll be fine.

Run CCleaner (Bill has already posted the link) every now and then, I do it weekly, to clean your temporary files. It doesn't matter if it's a week or a month to be honest, so don't worry if you forget to do it. Don't use the registry scanner in CCleaner, things like that tend to cause more problems than they solve.

I would also recommend defragging your hard disk with this:

Disk Defrag - Fast and Safe Defragmenter for Your Disks

Do so every 6 months.

Last, but not least, I would also suggest that you run weekly scans with MBAM - you should still have this installed. The free version is all we need :)

As you guys know, unless you turn it off, Vista automatically defrags the hard disk. Saves me a lot of time. The other helpful thing to run to keep a clean system is the Windows Disk Cleanup utility in Accessories.

As you guys know, unless you turn it off, Vista automatically defrags the hard disk. Saves me a lot of time. The other helpful thing to run to keep a clean system is the Windows Disk Cleanup utility in Accessories.

Yes, but if I remember correctly, it doesn't defrag files over 4GB - or whatever size it was, it's large files basically. So I turn to 3rd party software because half of my blu-ray rips are well over 4GB! I agree it won't make much difference, but it can't hurt :)
