I haven't seen this problem discussed in other threads. I am able to access the DVD drive during the start up routine until Vista gets running. Any ides about what the problem might be? Thanks for your help.

Richc46, I can't thank you enough for your help. Using the tutorial that you linked me to, I was able to find out that the conflict was with my external hard drive.

I am no longer able to operate the DVD with clean start up. It did work when I first tried it. The DVD doesn't work in safe mode either. The device manager says that the DVD is working properly and the drivers are up to date. Any ideas?

I would uninstall the drive or disconnect it and reboot. If disconnect was used, reconnect once Windows is running.
