I upgraded my Gateway All in one Gz7108 computer from Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate. Now the "Eject CD Key" on the keyboard no longer works, except during bootup before the Windows progress bar, then it will work. I can still go to eject in the right click menu for the CD drive. Anybody have any suggestions?

You need to install drivers for your hotkeys to function, I know because my Dell Inspiron 9400 and ASUS A6Je hotkeys (volume, eject, brightness and wireless) dont work without drivers.

My suggestion is to go to the Gateway site and download all drivers for your PC specified for Vista. The name of the package may be: "hotkey drivers", "chipset drivers", "Utility drivers", "Function drivers"... OR look for your driver cd.

Hope this helped.

If you go into Control Panel, then Keyboard does it have a list of programmable keys?

If that doesn't work you can download free programs to eject using a hotkey. I wrote one that uses a Gui instead, called Tray. You can see a screen shot and download it here:
FavesSoft Windows Utilities

edit: one advantage of my Gui is it works with Virtual CDs like WinCDEmu. A radio button is shown for the virtual drive. Selecting it and clicking Open Button will dismout the virtual CD. At least it works in WinCDEmu anyway:

Here's a screen shot of Tray

I have found the problem!
Gateway used a program called LCDCtr.exe. This is not present normally in any version of VISTA. Gateway was NO help AT ALL! They wanted me to spend $100 but would not guarantee they would find a solution, sounds like a giant ripoff to me! Anyway, I looked in MSCONFIG on a computer in which the eject key worked and compared it to one that did not work, to see what was running and saw 3 entries for "Hotkey". I disabled each one separately and finally found the one which disabled the function. It was LCDCtr.exe! So, I installed the file into "Windows" folder root directory. To get it to load automatically I put the correct string in "run" in the registry. Now my 2 Gateway GZ7108's running Vista Ultimate now have the eject key function back! Hooray!!
