Windows 7 Pro to Vista Ultimate

I have a DELL Latitude E6400 laptop with Win7 Pro already installed,
and I NOW need to install Windows VISTA ULTIMATE in it...

I notice there are TWO V-Ultimate disk versions:
the 64-bit and 32-bit disk - BOTH with anytime upgrade

Do I need to use BOTH?...AND if so, which one do I insert FIRST?

Welcome
You can use either. If you want 64 bit (if your computer can handle it) use the 64 bit. If you want 32 bit use that one. 64 bit can make additional memory available, plus other benefits, but your computer must be able to handle 64 bit. Do you know if you have a 64 bit processor?

EDIT: I have 64 bit Windows 7 and would not even think of using 32 bit.

Where are you getting that copy of Vista from? If it is from another manufacturer other than Dell it would be incompatible and even illegal to put in that computer. It must be a retail disk and there must also be Vista drivers. Although I know that some Vista drivers wonk on 7 I don't know if 7 drivers will work on Vista.

That's a good point. Unless one reads carefully, one would think he had Vista Pro and wanted to update to Vista Ultimate. Instead, it says he has Win 7 Pro and he wants to put Vista Ultimate on it. I missed that completely until you posted. Unless he wants a dual boot system, I don't know why he would install Vista.

The software is from the store...and the DELL laptop says it's just a 32-bit...

DON'T believe you can install a 64-bit on a 32...So we're settling with what we can tell...

It seemed to install OK - just need to re-install some of the drivers, but overall not bad

Good luck . I have a good friend, from my Air Force days. He is in a position with a Major Insurance co. They now have XP SP 3 , they will be going company wide to the Win7 , skipping Vista altogether, as its support shortly will cease. I , myself, plan on upgrading to Win7 within 2 months.

You can't install a 64-bit OS on the 32-bit computer but just because you have a 32-bit OS doesn't mean that you have a 32-bit processor. Anymore most processors are 64-bit. If your processor is 64-bit than you can put on a 64-bit OS.

Thing is, when AFTER the 32-bit Vista install we TRIED to clear
it with the 64 after learning that this laptop CAN handle it...

However when we insert the 64 disk and try, a pop-up note says that
the Vista 32-bit OS that's already on the PC WON'T install due to configurations - this unusual?

Unless you reformat your hdd, I would think you have to uninstall the 32 bit Vista.

Yes when you put in the disk Windows assumed that you wanted to "upgrade" the existing installation kind of like a change in the Vista version. However like stated you can't directly go from 32-bit to 64 bit. Windows must be reinstalled due to the vast differences in the operating system.
