Ipod problems

Hello fellow users!

I just got my first Apple product--Ipod Classic 160 GB. I downloaded Itunes without a hitch. Upon connecting my Ipod, I discovered my computer recognized it but not Itunes. Long, very, very long, story short, I worked with their service techs over the phone, unistalled and installed all relevant programs/files and still nothing. I went to the Apple store and they ran diagnostics on the Ipod and it checked out ok. Got it home and it still was not recognized by Itunes and only this time my PC did not even recognize it. Going through the process with another Apple tech I discovered my device manager was empty---nothing. My machine has been running flawlesly and so I had not even noticed that. The only major program I got within the last couple months was when Earthlink switched to Norton Anti-virus and internet protection, other than that, I'm stumped. If anyone out there can give me some sage advice on how to solve this problem, I'd be most grateful. Thanks a bunch!

Hello, don't you have to set up a sync partnership for that ? Open up Control Panel and check in Sync. See if that will enable all to work .

Thank you, Yard Dog for your reply.

Getting the Ipod to sync was something already tried---no luck--no recognition at all. I'm still at a loss trying to figure this one out.

Have you tried "run as administrator" for the iTunes .exe?

Re: this Norton you mentioned , not sure here, wanting to make sure . Is Norton the only antivirus program in use or do you have others, and if so, you need to just use one. If you have any other programs that are running an active anti virus , then stop them from running in real time and use just one. If you have others , let me know and i will instruct you on how to remove all but the one you want to use . You can have an anti malware and an anti spyware program running, as they are not the same as an anti virus . Post me what you have going on here on this issue please.

Would you mind taking a screenshot of what you see in device manager for us please?

Are you using an administrator account?

Yard Dog---thanks again for brainstorming this issue for me.

Norton is the only anti-virus I'm running. Earthlink had others in the past, Kaspersky, etc., before going to Norton, but now Norton is exclusively my protection, and this includes their whole suite: anti-malware, spyware and the like. Even all the Windows programs, firewall, defender, anti-virus, etc., are shut down. All previous Earthlink protection programs have been completely removed as well. Norton, I must say, is quite powerful because nothing gets by it and I update everyday. Could it be I have some corrupted files in Vista that are causing this problem? Honestly, my machine other than this is operating flawlessly.

Still searching.

Hi

I have this issue regularly with iTunes not finding the iPod and this is how I solve it. It works for me so I hope it works for you. First please make sure that iTunes is not set to open automaticly when the iPod is connected. This is under preferences.

1. Close iTunes and disconnect the iPod
2. Go to Start and type services.msc
3. Find the services called Apple Mobile Device and iPod Service
4. Click Restart this service for both of them (left hand panel)
5. Attach the iPod and see if it appears under Computer
6. If it does, open iTunes.
7. Hope for the best!

Post the results back please.

Thank you patch41

Tried unticking tamper protection but still no luck. Itunes still does not recgonize the ipod and neither does my computer. When I open my computer it acknowledges something plugged into my F drive but only in an empty generic way. It prompts me to format the device. And of course, I don't want that. Anything else I should try?

Thanks Tom982 for your reply!

Device Manager is literally empty--nothing seen and nothing comes up as hidden or otherwise. And this is my home desktop so just running the original user setup which I have from day one.

It may sound stupidly obvious but have you tried another USB port? If you are connecting it through a hub, connect it directly to the pc. Also, try another cable if you have one.

Techno Venus-- not at all. Your suggestion is a good one however I've tried 3 different USB ports---all on my Dell desktop. Plus other devices work perfectly in those same ports. I appreciate your efforts.
