If rich's links dont make it clear enough, you will lose all your info on the drive in the process.

Thanks for the info and link. I have a second hard drive that I use only for backup. Will that drive be safe from the format/re-install? Can I use it to save all my data, music, photos, etc?

Is it possible to have one hard drive with 64 bit version and another running 32 bit version? This would allow me to run all the software that I have.

When an upgrade DVD of vista is purchased, usually two DVDs are provided. The first is 32 bit and the second is 64 bit. You have the choice of using either one. You can switch from one to the other as many times as you like. Unless the letters OEM appear in the key number you can use as many computers as you like.

BUT

Only one computer (drive) at a time. You cannot have Vista on two computers (or on two drives) at the same time. MS has ways of knowing if you do. You will lose functionality of your Vistas. They can, in fact, pursue it legally as theft of service.

As stated when changing from 32 to 64-bit you will have to do a complete reinstall due to the architectural differences in the versions. Running the cd from windows causes it to assume that you are doing an upgrade throwing that error. You must boot into it. As for 2 installations, I don't know why you would need both. Do you have any software that you think won't work on 64-bit?

townsbg,
If I understand, you are saying that I cannot do the install running the CD from Windows? So, should I first format the HD and then begin the install?
Thanks,
david

Yes you have to reformat and reinstall (otherwise known as a clean install). Follow Rich's instructions.
