Solved Robocopy

I have Windows Vista Home Premium and somebody recently mentioned to me about Robocopy to use from cmd. Unfortunately I got into a mess and cmd froze so that I had to force shut down.

Can somebody kindly let me know how to use robocopy to copy files and directories my document on C: drive into external hard drive J: in a simple language as possible.

Hi Richard,
Perhaps you misunderstood me. At present I copy my document files from my computer hard drive to an external hard drive mannually once a week.
I did not like 'backup' programme because I can not see the files.
I want to use robocopy for this simple backup as I was told I can see the backup files on the robocopy.
Please advise. Thanks

Hi Richard,
I went through your new post and I still find it hard to follow. I do not want to clone the HDD or ghost copy.
All I want is to do is incremental back up from my document on drive C: in my desk top to USB External HDD J:
I think I will stick to my present method when I simply copy few fills created every week on Word, Excel etc and then personal folders from Outlook.
Thank you any way. What I was looking for is the actual steps of using robocopy but I am finding your answer is bit beyond me.

A simple method is to use FreeCommander folder sync. It can sync folders in both directions and with subfolders if desired. Before it does anything it shows you every file in a list and which will copy in which direction, then gives a summary before you hit the final button. Very straight-forward:

just click on Downloads to get the program. It's free. I've been using it for years. It's very stable. Only thing a bit lacking is the F1 help is somewhat out of date. So a user put up those tutorials.

There are a lots of programs out there to do update, differential or incremental backups without compression. You can also do synch jobs which synchronize files and folders without compression (I think Win 7 has this feature). I work with Nero Backitup, which can do all these. Of course, I'm biased.
