Possibly I misunderstand, but the 'file association' link that you gave me describes how to configure windows to open a certain application based on a filetype.

In my case, I don't want to open an application at all, because the application, Windows Photo Gallery, is already open.

Instead, what I want to do is to create the type of file that Windows Photo Gallery output.

I assume that this setting is within Windows Photo Gallery and not Windows-side.

But, maybe I'm confused.

My Computer

ahh.. you want to change the type of file that has a type extension already ? If you right click the file. you can rename it to what extension you want. Does that do what you want ?

I did a poor job of stating the problem statement, so let me try again: Windows Photo Gallery allows me to 'Import From File or Camera'. I then put a document or photo on my all-in-one, and Windows Photo Gallery uses the all-in-one to scan the document/photo.

This results in an output file from Windows Photo Gallery. Windows Photo Gallery wants to save this file off as bmp. I can over-ride this, but I don't want to have to manually over-rodie the file type from bmp to jpg each time. I want the default to be jpg.

I'm asking how I can change that default, the default output file type from Windows Photo Gallery after scanning a document or photo.

I assume that this is controlled by a setting somewhere in Windows Photo Gallery, but I can't find the setting.

Thanks.

For me it apparently is already set for jpg (at least according to the example) however I don't see how to change it. Look for any settings under Windows photo gallery options --> import. Perhaps it is there. I don't like or use photo gallery so I don't know what else to tell you.

I think you might want to check your scanner software.

I have a hp scanjet 5590. I opened WPG and selected the import option. In the dialogue box that came up, I had the option to select the file type (it was jpg by default) and it imported into WPG as a jpg.

wither 3 - In WPG, if I choose File -> Import From Camera or Scanner, I get exactly the 'New scan' dialog box that you attached to your post.

I can indeed change the 'File Type' from 'bmp' to 'jpg', but that setting only 'sticks' for the current scan. The next time I enter the 'New scan' screen, the setting is 'bmp' again.

Do I misunderstand what you are telling me?

My Computer

When I open the HP Solution Center and select my scanner, there is a Settings option. If I click on Button Settings, the default is .jpg. This makes sense since, if you were just wanting to scan a document by pressing the print or copy button and want the default to be a .jpg, then you'ld want the button to be set to .jpg. Obviouly, this is going to be what you get, regardless of whether the item on the scanner is a piece of paper or a picture.

wither 3 -

I don't have HP Sol Ctr, but with your hint I went to Control Panel and changed the profile for the scanner to one that uses jpeg.

I had earlier tried to change the device's profile in WPG's New Scan screen, but kept getting an error.

Anyhow, thank you very much for the help!

P.S. I had to try posting this several times - getting 'token expired'

My Computer

Are you talking about Windows Control Panel? Just wondering how you went about what you did.

I'm glad you have it working.

Yes, I navigated : Windows Control Panel -> Scanners and Cameras -> select <WIA Canon MP470...> Scan Profiles (button). The resulting 'Scan Profiles' screen offers the ability to manage multiple profiles for this device and/or add a new profile. Also, I can select one of the profiles from the list and click the 'Set as Default' button. <- That was the solution.

My Computer

Neat! I was looking in Device Manager. That's nice to know about.
