icons flicker

ok, new one for you guys, when I navigate between folders, my icons on the desktop, and whatever folder I have open, flicker, and its more often than not when I have either the event viewer or performance monitor open.

though that doesnt mean it doesnt happen whenever either of those arent.

my system appears to be stable, no crashes, no apps refusing to load.. so, dunno..

have you ever seen that before? also, where should I submit this to get a broader viewpoint?

update:

I recently did a system wide backup of my personal files, so if it is a problem that needs immediate attention, besides updating my bookmarks and image file archives, I'm good.

Welcome,
I think the problem is due to one of these causes
Memory
Need for a faster video card
Card Driver
Processor
Too much clutter. Do a clean dsk
Malware or Virus
Maybe a CHKDSK and a defrag might help too.

Make a hard drive test.
Hard drive scan usings SeaTools - SeaToolsfor Windows | Seagate - Both long and shorttests

Update video card driver
Download and run ccleaner, to remove all excess files etc.
Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

in order...

1, got 4gb of ram, more than enough.
2, there's always a need for a faster card and no I'm not being sarcastic or a smart alec.
3, its running the most recent card driver.
4, really doubtful, other things would start to be affected.
5, for an installation less than a year old? still, always possible...(oh! yeah, I did a ccleaner scan last night)
6, I really doubt it... I ran several scans with the following: spybot sd, panda cloud antivirus, and malware bytes, in addition to a malware and virus scan on the norton online scanner, and all scans came up clean.
7, it defrags automatically once a month, and I have no idea how to run chkdsk..

is it possible I've got something screwy with my user profile and or my hard disk?

ahh... so thats where it went.... thanks for the chkdsk help.

mem test comes up clean.

can do that one on boot through the bios.

question, how do I turn off the ability for chkdsk to make any changes before I know if theres a problem? cause the last few times I ran it back when I had xp... did not go so well.

Mem test takes hours to do properly. Most do it over night.

There are two boxes to check in chkdsk, see tutorial. If you check just the first no changes are made.
If you chk the second there will be a change only if you have HD problems. These tests will tell you that

just to be sure I didnt mix terms, mem test means ram, right? those thin little sticks that one sometimes has trouble finding the proper make and model of when one wishes to upgrade?

You are correct about ram. You test each slot for 8 passes. Then you take a good stick and test each slot for 8 passes.

ya, I did that, ran the test 12 times per stick, despite how much of a pain in the backside getting at the laptop's memory is.

I would retry installing .net framework 4. It shouldn't take but a few minutes. Do you have Windows Installer 4.5 installed?

I would think, as noted above, it's in the graphics or monitor. If you're monitor has a setting for restoring the factory settings, I'd give it a try.

Right click on the desktop and select Personalize. Then select Display Settings and Advanced Settings. Under the Monitor tab, what is the refresh rate set for? If possible, you might try increasing it. Note that this setting is dependent on the screen resolution so, you might not always be able to increase the refresh rate. I didn't research the refresh rate your graphics chipset is capable of.

Do you have the HP Support Assistant installed? If so, I recommend that you run the automated diagnostic to see if there are any problems.

Probably to get higher refresh rates, you would have to lower your screen resolution to something like 1280x... Of course, I don't think you want to do that on a permanent basis so the diagnostic is the way to go.

Are you're using the latest driver from the HP website for your graphics?

Do you have anything else running that could be hogging graphics or the cpu?

You could try the HP forum to get that "broader perspective" or contact HP directly.

machine's off warranty, they want money for a service plan just to tell me where the forums are.
thats pretty much the only reason I'm considering toshiba instead of hp for my next system.

and I hardly consider yahoo messenger, pidgin messenger, and firefox to be graphically demanding unless I'm doing mech quest or youtube on the last one...

and I should, updated that last december anyways.
