problem with Vista after ghosting hd

I installed a new hd in my dell computer. I am running Vista x64. I ghosted my c drive onto my new drive (L). My computer works fine aside from the fact that I can not update anything nor can I install anything. Does anyone know what I did wrong?
When I unplug the new drive (L), windows will not boot even though the original C drive is still connected. Thank you in advance

Hi,

Not really sure what happned, so, have you always had the "C" drive connected before & after imaging the drive? Has the new drive always been "L" drive?

Your new drive from created "image" should be a replacement "C" drive & the old "C" drive should be disconnected until you are satisfied that the new drive is working correctly.

Please explain in detail what you did. OK?

I have the C drive connected before and after. I have had both drives connected for the past few months. I have not been able to update anything (windows, anti-virus, etc.) nor can I install anything. Should I disconnect the old C drive? Will this fix things?

I notice that when I save my documents and other items in my documents, it is saving to the C drive yet when I unplug the c drive from the computer, it will not boot up on the l drive by itself.

All i did was install a new internal drive (L) and ghost the c drive to it. I left both drives in the machine.

OK,

That is were that problem has has come from, you should have removed one of the system drives as they were both the same one!

Do you still have the image file to image the old "C" drive back to the day you did the changes?

Of course after backing up your documents etc.

You have to change the BIOS boot sequence when you want to boot from the old drive. I had a lot of problems with Ghost for imaging too. Next time use Macrium, it is a lot better. Imaging with free Macrium - Windows 7 Forums

Hi,

Ghost will do what you tell it to do!

So, did you image the drive to a file on a drive, Bluray, DVD or even CD's or did you clone it straight to the new drive?

It seems there are two systems working together, Windows Vista on "C" & "L". Also as whs states, the BIOS boot device might need changing to reflect the new drive as the new system & boot disk.

Please note: -
Your files could have been saved to either of the two disks during saves!

Please check & back-up before you loose them!
