Swapping SATA data cable

I have a question. I have a new pc that has extra drive space for another hard drive inside. I still have my old pc that also used a sata hard drive. Can I disconnect the sata data cable from my old pc's motherboard and connect that same data cable onto my new pc's motherboard for use with my old hard drive?

You're just talking about unplugging the SATA cable from the mobo aren't you? If so, there's no reason why you can't do that if the new mobo supports SATA and there's empty connections.

Yes. On the HP website it says my motherboard has six SATA 3.0 connectors (specifically what does that mean?). And I opened it up a while ago and saw that the motherboard had at least 2 other Sata ports on the motherboard that aren't used.

My Sata data transfer was 3.0Gb/s and IIRC was Sata 2. I'm not sure if I can disconnect it off now I was trying to and the damn clip broke off!

In regards to the old OS not working, it will work if you shutdown and unplug the new hard drive.
