Solved Recovery Disks

My laptop, purchased three years ago died. Bought and installed a new hard drive and seemed to work well for a while. At the time of original purchase I made two DVDs for full system recovery, which I understand will return the computer to factory settings.
When I install the first DVD in the drive the drive spins for a while then stops, nothing installs.
How do I get the computer to use the disk in the drive to activate the re-boot and install all the original software?
At present when I start up normally I get a message "Vista need to be reinstalled" and "This is not a genuine copy of Microsoft Software."
Thanks for any help.
Buzz.

Depends on what media it is calling bad.

Make sure you are booting from the dvd drive.

Youll need to go into the bios, f2 or delete may do it,. It usually says the key when you boot. "press f2 for settings" is what my acer says.

Once we establish what is invalid, we can start trouble shooting.

Thanks for interest in my quest. Point is how can I be sure windows boots from the recovery disks? Is the procedure to put disk in DVD drive before turning on the machine? Or is there another method of booting from the disks?
Thanks,
Buzz

Hi Yard Dog,
After a bit of juggeling with the Boot manager I managed to boot from the Recovery Disks,
Eventualy with a few hick-ups everything fell into place. At one stage the graphics looked terrible but as I say with a few re-boots things appear normal.
Thank you so much for your suggestions and the tutorial.
I consider this problem solved, thanks to your help.
