Solved Zip File Problem

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit, on an HP Pavilion Media Center m7790e TVPC. This problem just started. My zip files appear with an IE icon, and, of course, extract doesn't appear on the menu when I right click. I've already deleted and rebuilt the icon cache, but that didn't help. Also, if I try double clicking the file, it won't open, and everything on the screen begins to flash. I've tried viewing forum discussions, but nobody has mentioned the flashing after double clicking, and others have had the icon cache rebuild solve their problems. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Nancy,

It sounds like the file association has somehow been changed to Internet Explorer (instead of Windows Explorer). I don't have the latest IE installed, but I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft included an extension to deal with ZIP files.

If double-clicking on other file types is fine, and it's just the ZIP files that are the problem, then you might want to try resetting the file association. Do you have WinZip installed, or some other ZIP utility? If so, then in Windows Explorer, hold the shift key down and then right mouse click on any ZIP file. Select "Open with..." and browse to the program for the default opening of ZIP files. If you do not have any 3rd party ZIP file program, then do the following:

Go to the Start menu
Type "command" in the search box
Then right click on "Command Prompt" as is now shown above in the menu
and select "Run as Administrator"

In the command window type: assoc .zip=CompressedFolder

That will restore .zip files to their original Windows Explorer associations.

Let us know if it works out for you.
