Solved Mouse cursor problem - unstable position

Hello

On my Windows Vista Home Premium system I have for years had a problem: The "active point" of the mouse cursor is not stable. (By "active point" I mean the point that responds when I click.)

For example, the mouse may be the usual arrow. However the "active point" is not necessarily at the tip of the arrow. So when I click, the system may think I clicked at the pixel in the middle of the arrow icon instead of the the pixel at the tip of the arrow.

It helps quite a bit that many buttons in Windows Vista lights up when I am over them, but for precision work it is very frustrating.

Can anybody help me solve this problem once and for all?!?

Best regards,
Lars

Hello Lars and welcome to the forums

Are you using a custom cursor? If so, can you change all of your cursors back to the default ones please and let us know if the problem persists.

Hello Tom (as well as others who may have an idea)

Thanks for asking, but no, I am not using any custom cursors. This problem has existed right from the beginning (buying the machine from new). I chose to use the XP-like desktop rather than the default Vista desktop, but otherwise I am not aware of any tweaking of the interface.

Hello Lars,

Okay, custom cursors can do all sorts of funny things, so I thought that would be a good place to start. Let's try a SFC (System File Checker) scan then:

SFC Scan

  1. Open your start menu and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

    start notepad.exe %userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

  4. This will open a text file with the results of the scan. Please Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this into your next post.

Hello Tom and wither 3

wither 3, I did go to the control panel. The theme was "Windows Aero (system theme)", and I have changed it to none. Based on a few minutes testing, this actually seems to help on the normal arrow marker. However, I have tried opening a Word document containing some tables, and find (as usual) that I cannot trust the position if I want to manipulate columns or rows: E.g., when the curser changes to a horisontal double arrow for manipulation of column size, then the middle of the arrow does not correspond to the position of the line.

Tom, I did the scanning you described, and the results are below. A bit confusing, I did not see wither 3's post until afterwards, so the result is from before changing mouse theme. Please let me know if I should do it again.

For both of you, thanks a lot for helping. This has really been a problem for a very long time, and I have been at loss of what to do. For the first time in a very long time, I begin to hope of actually finding a solution.

Here comes the data from the scanning:

Hi Lars,

Thanks, no problems there :) What is the make/model of your mouse? I think it would be a good idea to try updating the mouse drivers. Does this happen with other mice?

Hi Tom

My mouse is nothing special that I know of. A Dell mouse that came with the system: USB, wheel, the usual two buttons, no special name. The control panel tells me that it is installed as "HID compatible mouse" with this driver:
Produced by Microsoft.
Date: June 21, 2006
Version: 6.0.6001.18000
Digitally signed by microsoft windows
I have tried updating the driver, but am told that it is up-to-date.

I have now also tried another mouse, an Ienovo mouse. It installs with the same driver, and I see no difference: The mouse pointer position is not quite stable (and my "few minutes testing" earlier gave a too optimistic result :().

In fact, I find that manipulating tables in Word, the mouse pointer is never in the correct position, when the cursor changes from the arrow to special cursors for handling the lines of the table. Any chance this could be a Word problem? Except that it affects not only Word, and starts before Word has been started...

Just in case: I am using Microsoft Office 2007, and the version of Word is (12.0.6661.5000) SP3 MSO (12.0.6607.1000). Automatic updates for Windows are on, and as far as I understand it, that includes automatic updates of Office.

The SFC scan had a few errors, I saw. Could this be anything?

Hope anything of this might ring a bell!

Best regards,
Lars

Lars, did you try searching the Dell forums to see if anybody has had this problem? It sounds like it's a hardware issue of some kind. You've replaced drivers and swapped mouse peripherals, and yet you still have the same issue.

One other thing to try... maybe the video driver is contributing to this? I'd try updating it. But before you do that, check to see if Dell has an update for the system BIOS. I'd check the "Read Me" on the latest to see what it recommends (you might be directed to a BIOS that came out before it). The BIOS contains fundamental code for system level functions, including Basic Input and Output. After you upgrade that, then try upgrading the video driver.

As a last resort, Dell does provide complete system restores for computers that they sell. You'd have to reinstall all of your software, but it might cure the problem. If this is the last thing you try and it still doesn't help, then I fear you've got a hardware issue/defect.

Hi Cyntherian. I will try out looking at the Dell forums, check other video driver, etc. as you suggest.

However, to me it still sounds more like a software problem than a hardware problem. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I would think the system architecture would be something like this:
1. Mouse hardware: Responds to user movement, clicking etc.
2. Mouse driver: Interprets the hardware signals and gives the system (Windows) hardware-independent information on movement, button-down, button-up etc. May also be this level that interprets a double-click.
3. Driver or Windows? : Restricts movement to the screen size
4. Windows (rather than driver)? : Shows the mouse as an icon on the screen
5. Applications: Respond to the input (clicking, entering a field, leave a field) given as messages by Windows
The problem will then be at point 4 on this list. It is unclear to me why this stage of the interpretation should depend on the hardware - be it the mouse itself or the rest of the system. But sure, if there is something I overlook or misinterpret, please let me know.

Lars

My Computer

Hi Lars,
Sorry, you misunderstood my intention... I said it sounds like a hardware problem based on what you describe (like faulty mouse behavior), but then noted you had tried other mouse peripherals. I guess I should have followed with "so, it probably isn't be a hardware problem". Didn't mean to confuse you there. I did follow with software suggestions though. :) Any other kind of hardware problem would suggest a faulty chipset with the video card, but then this would probably crop up quite a lot with a given batch of computers and Dell would likely have contacted customers about it.
Anyway, do follow up on what I suggested and hopefully it'll either solve it or bring you much closer to figuring it out (further isolating the possible cause). You should also post your question to the Dell forums. I have done this in the past when I owned a Dell laptop and people were generally pretty helpful there.

Hello everybody

The problem is partly solved. In the proces of checking everything (finding nothing wrong, but at least upgrading the bios in the process) I suddenly realised that I have a long time ago installed unsigned programs. One was card reader, the second was in fact a Microsoft program, namely part of Office 2000 (the home pack does not include Access, so I still use Access 2000). Removing these programs from the startup list has made my mouse a lot more stable :)

While the mouse no longer suddenly changes "active" position, it does - now consistently - start up with a wrong position. I check that by moving the mouse arrow to the top left corner. On my usual account, the pointer consistently does not completely go to the corner.

However, this seems to be linked to that account. So I would like to ask all you nice persons if there is an easy way to migrate data (but not system settings) to a new account? I can create the account, and I do not have that many programs installed for single-account, so it should be manageable. Perhaps for the documents, a USB stick is the easiest solution. How about a program like iTunes - I would like to migrate or copy my podcasts to the new account?

Thanks for all the good advice so far,
Lars

Hello wither3

Did you try the diagnostics I recommended?

Yes, and it worked fine: No memory problems, all cores of the CPU working, the peripherals working etc. The diskette drive did not work, which is no surprise, since the computer has none! So the hardware seems to be working fine.

Checking for BIOS version and drivers showed that there was a new version of the BIOS and a few drivers, all of which I have installed. So also on this side the computer should be up-to-date - always a good thing.

The card reader driver I mentioned in my previous post was one I overtook when I became treasurer for a local club. Since I am no longer using it (and the new treasurer has got a new model of the card reader), I could simply uninstall it.

Best regards,
Lars

Sounds like a plan. Maybe it will cure the last issue.

I don't think you need to migrate data to the new account. It should be accessible. If you want to restrict it to the new account, then I think you could either set up permissions for the files and folders or you could do it at the user account level. I'm not good at that stuff so it would be best to look at the help file.

Hello again

I have thought of another solution than creating a new account. Perhaps I could reset my current account by making the account's NTUSER.DAT file unaccessible? My plan is to rename it to something else, e.g. NTUSER.DA0, so that the file is "gone" from the system's point of view, and the system will create a new NTUSER.DAT file for that user like it would for a new account, but I still have the option of replacing NTUSER.DAT with the original.

My expectation is that this will reset local settings (including hopefully that erroneous setting that makes the remains of the problem appear), without changhing the ownership and path for my files. Programs installed for only that account will probably have to be reinstalled.

My questions are:

a) How do I rename it? It is a hidden system file.
b) Is there anything special I should be aware of?

Best regards,
Lars

Before you do anything, create a system restore point. You could then delete the file (or rename it to .old or whatever).

Thanks for the advice.

Since the original problem of unstable mouse cursor is (almost) solved, and the question of how to reset an account is an issue that can be regarded separately, I think I will mark this question as solved, and start a new thread.

Thanks to everybody who helped.

Best regards,
Lars
