Welcome
Lets start by looking for Malware
Make a full anti virus scan
Downloand and make a full scan with Malwarebytes.
If this does not work
Follow this tutorial
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html
If that does not help
Make a system restore point and then download
CCleaner and use it.
Finally if nothing else works
Use Soluto. Dont forget about the system restore just in case.

Take the action in the order given, here.

Virus scan shows nothing after a full scan. I am using Symantec endpoint protection.

There are some unknown files which i am not sure if they are safe to remove though. Maybe i shall snipe a pic and post here later.

By the way is Daemon Tools an important tool? I can't find a way to uninstall this programme.

Daemon is your virtualization software.
Dont forget Malwarebytes.
Make sure that the anti virus and malwarebytes is updated before the FULL scan

Trust me, Malwarebyes is one of the best. After your problem is solved, you should still scan with it once a week.

Anything from the 2nd list is safe to delete? Most are unknown files/programmes. As for the 1st list is the Apple... programme worth to delete also i have no idea what are those.

Software looks alright to me. Malwarebytes virus removal tool is designed to do an on-command sweep of your system and address a number of specific viruses that might not be handled by your average anti-virus software. There's no harm in running it.

You may also want to try booting up without any start-up items launched and see if you experience a difference. Same thing for services. And if you notice a difference, then you can start narrowing it down to individual ones. You may find that one or more programs is contributing to your start-up lag.

Another good thing to do is a hard disk defragmentation. On average there won't be a significant improvement, but it'll help eliminate that as a contributor.
