So I am trying to upgrade my old Dell Inspiron's RAM, It currently has 2 1gig sticks of DDR2 SDRAM 667.0 MHz. My question is I am currently on newegg looking up ram sticks, If there anything certain I should be looking for?

I wanna make sure I pick up the correct parts when doing this.

Thanks in advance

System One

  • Manufacturer/Model
    Dell Inspiron 1521
    CPU
    AMD Sempron 3600+ / 2.0 GHz
    Memory
    2.0 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667.0 MHz
    Graphics Card(s)
    ATI RADEON Xpress1270 HyperMemory
    Hard Drives
    160.0 GB HDD / 5400.0 rpm
What you can use is normally dependent on the motherboard. I suggest going here-
Computer Memory Selector | Dell

plug in your tag number, and see what Dell is recommending.

Since most motherboards use memory banks that contain more than one stick, it's important that all the sticks you buy are identical.

The motherboard will only support so much RAM. You can put more than that in, but it will only recognize the max amount supported. Depending on how old the computer is, it might only take 2GB. There should be documentation for your model at Dell's support site.

That's what I recommended 2 days ago.

Buying RAM from Dell is OK (and easiest) - but it tends to cost anything up to 50% more there than buying exactly the same stick from anywhere else.

The original question is making sure he was getting the correct type of RAM. Since the Dell website will provide information on his particular computer model number, I felt it was the best place to look for this information. Once he has that, he can buy the RAM anywhere he likes.

Heh.... - assuming the machine is the Inspiron 1521 in the OP's System Specs, it's limited to 2GB/slot
Offtek wants to change £20.50 each
'Mr Memory' wants £22.80
Dell UK want £31.20
Kingston want £28.60
Corsair want £23.60 (thru Scan)
...all the above are for single unmatched 2GB modules
Crucial are asking £50.40 for a matched pair of 2GB modules

(All the sites provided therir own data with no need for anything except make & model of computer)
