Laptop not booting up

Hi,

First of I'm not that knowledgable about computers hence why I'm posting on here. (also not sure if this is a actually the right section to post this on either :/).

Anyways... Yesterday my laptop started playing up where nothing would load up at all nor would it shut down so I had to manually do it pressing the button. When I switched it on a black page came up saying that a hardware may not be configured properly and to try and repair it with the vista repair CD. It also had options for safe mode or start windows normally. I tried clicking each option but every time it would load up to the vista loading bar and then restart over and over again (even when I tried it for safe mode). So I googled what to do next and a lot of sites mentioned repairing vista with the repair CD so I thought let's try that!

I did get a CD with my laptop which I thought it was the repair CD. Turns out it's not, it's the manufacturers one (OEM I think it's called?) and it's only a full restore of vista that was already preloaded on my laptop when I got it. But I didn't know that! So I stupidly put the CD in and went through the steps and I realized that in actual fact it was reinstalling vista which I didn't want it to do so I cancelled it. Now here's where things went from bad to worse. When I switch the laptop on now a message comes up saying "bootmgr is missing. Press ctrl+alt+delt to restart".

And now I have no idea what to do now?!?! I would have done a full reinstall of vista BUT I didn't back up all my data before all this happened so is there any way to get my data back or is that me screwed?!?!

My laptop had windows vista home basic 32 bit.

Welcome
If you follow these instructions you will:
Be able to determine if your problem is hardware or software. If it is hardware you will not be able to load Ubuntu.
Second, you can back up your stuff.
Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek
After you have done the above, you can try to follow this tutorial or just use your CD to reinstall.

If the tutorial works, it would be the easiest method.

If you installed Ubuntu correctly it sounds like everything may be lost.
