Hi guys (and girls),

I'm trying to replace the hard drive in my Hp Pavillion dv5 laptop.

Its running windows vista home premium.
I have here a bunch of pictures of the steps I took.

I think that I have the hard drive in my hands, but not completely sure.

Here are some pictures, hope they can help you to help me.

Step 1)Turn off the laptop

fcqulx.jpg

Step 2) Unscrew a bunch of mini screws and take off the covers.

Step 3) take out the hard drive

^^ is that the hard drive? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

EDIT: Yes thats the hard drive, showed it to a friend and he took out the cover and unplugged it for me. It looked fine though, it didn't seem to be fried or anything.. I reinstalled the same one, I'll just give it another go with the installation.

EDIT: Installation takes over an hour just at the "loading setup" screen, guess the hard drive really is screwed.

Hello windows8 and welcome to the forums

Yes, as your friend has confirmed, that's the hard drive :) Hard drive faults are unlikely to be visible from the outside, they are very delicate and things tend to go wrong on the inside.

Have you got a replacement to fit?

Tom

Hi Tom!

Thanks for the welcome.

I have yet to buy a replacement, as I was contemplating on whether I should order online at somewhere like ebay or NCIX or to go to a local repair shop.

If i were to buy one, would it have to be a "Hitachi" hard drive?

Would this hard drive fit? They're both 2.5". the second link is the one I have.

It doesn't have to be hitachi but it does have to fit and have the same type connectors, compatible power consumption, etc.

The first link looks like the one you have and the second one looks like one your looking for. The latter has some very good advice for replacing the harddrive.

I wouldn't buy on eBay unless you're awful trustworthy.

Do you have the Vista installation disc?

I have all my installation disc's, but I plan on downgrading to XP so I can make it compatible with my other software.

so any 2.5 sata drive fits? good news for me.

Also @wither 3 as it says above the link, the second link is the factory one currently inside my laptop.

The power consumption has to be the same? the factory one is 5200rpm and the ncix was 7400rpm, is that the difference you were talking about?

EDIT: whats the difference between SATA,SATA2,SATA3?

I wanted to buy this drive: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=72504&vpn=ST320LT007&manufacture=Seagate

will SATA3 work in my laptop?

This one doesn't even say SATA.. but its a 2.5".

The one I have is a SATA 1.5Gb/s. does it make a difference if I upgrade to a SATA II 3gb/s?

I believe the DV5 has support for SATA II. I'm seriously considering the Seagate XT Momentus hybrid, which gives performance somewhere between standard SATA and SSD. Power consumption is supposed to be a little more due to 7200rpm. Some people have reported noticeable battery drain, but most do not. You never know if someone is just not managing their computer power properly.

Oh thats what you guys meant by power consumption.

The battery lives for about 6 hours of internet usage/downloading software the way it is, so a few hours decrease in usage won't bother me as its just for temporary use.

You'll see maybe 20 mins tops, but thats only if you go to a 7200 rpm drive from the 5400rpm one.

What I mean by power usage is watts used by the hard drive. It has to be compatible with the power supply in your DV5. I would imagine that most drives would be acceptable.

Finding the specs on a DV5 is almost impossible- especially since we don't know which flavor of DV5 you have. I mean, I see a DV5-1235dx, Dv5-1135la, etc. Most of the specs don't include the mobo.

Yes, hp seems to have that problem when it comes to sub modeling.

I believe its a Dv5-1000, but thats according to the hard drive part number, which also says that Dv1 to Dv8 or so have the same HD.

Are all hard drives the same size as long as its 2.5"? if so I'll just go and pick one up.

Once I plug in the new HD, are there any procedures I should do, or should I just boot from the installation disc/usb right away considering theres no more windows.

^ You have a DV5-1000 and get about 6 hours of battery life?? Do you have an extended battery installed? I have the same model and when new it barely got 2.25 hours. Eventually when the battery lost its ability to hold a charge (about 2 years later), I bought a replacement and find I don't get more than just over 2 hours. I have the Intel 2.53GHz duo core CPU and the somewhat power hungry NVidia GeForce 9600M 512Mb video card.

Well I just have my screen brightness a little low (not too low) and kept everything stock asides from windows 7 ultimate with no junk programs/applications in it, along with regular clean installs. my battery also went as well so I had to get another battery for it. regular use of ccleaner and battery seems just fine now.

Try downloading some tweaking app's to reduce your battery usage.

Its a nice laptop though, with the remote and everything, but not really my style.

with my hp pavilion g6 (750gb and 4gb ram) i get almost 7 hours of life time.

Time does pass by alot slower when...

I mean uh, no.. of course not.

Anyways, today or tomorrow I'll do some looking around at the local shops and see if they have any good HD's, if they try to charge me double then I'll probably order from NCIX.

Those run times from a full charge seem exceptionally long for a Windows based laptop. I've owned 4 different laptops (2 different HP's and two different Dell's) and none of them could go longer than 2.5 hours per full charge. My present computer is an HP Pavilion DV5 as well, but I'm running Windows Vista (you're on Windows 7). When I first got it, I found the computer hitting the low power level warning after 2.25 hours. This eventually started to drop off until 2 years later when the battery needed to be replaced. Granted I have a power hungry video card, a GeForce 9600M GT 512Mb, and the T9400 Intel Cor Duo 2.53GHz processor takes more power than the slower processors that were available.

Anyway, I plan on getting an SSD drive which will consume less power. Did you ever get yourself a new drive? If so, what type is it?
