Question on permissions

I went through a very trying time to find the solution for this error: "Can't find script engine VBScript for script." It didn't have to do with registering the dlls, but rather that Avast had taken possession of/overwritten the registry key involved and through piecing various threads together I finally managed to find a resolution.

Thing is, I had to take ownership of the registry key. I literally stumbled around and finally managed to get it done, though at this point I'm not sure I could even tell you how.

Is it important for me now to put this key back under the ownership of TrustedInstaller? I'm asking because I Googled doing this and found instructions, but was even more confused than I was when I had to take ownership.

I'd sure appreciate help/clarification with this.

Thank you in advance.

P.S. I just tried to follow those instructions and apparently it didn't work. I still have full control on certain keys, but now they are greyed out so that I can't click on them to take the check out of the "Allow" box. I'm sorry but this whole thing confuses me so badly.

Did you see my P.S. where I did try to restore but it still looks like others have full permission?

I had trouble following this page because, for instance, on diagram #3, my page does not have an "Edit" box at the bottom as this one shows.

Here is what my permissions box now looks like. See screenshots.

This is wrong. Please let me start over.

My Advanced Security Settings now look like this (top&bottom):

My Permissions box looks like the second set of screenshots. Notice how on the bottom the Full permissions are checked as allowed but now greyed out so I can't change them.

Im a disadvantage because I do not know what registry item you changed. But with registry involved, this is what I would do.
If first make an image and put it on an external hard drive (this is always good to do) and update once a month
Imaging with free Macrium - Windows 7 Forums
Also make a system restore.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html
back up registry
Registry - Backup and Restore - Windows 7 Forums
Seems like a lot of work, but it is not. These are things that you should always have in the case of unexpected emergency
If you screw up with the registry you can always fix it if you are prepard with the above.

I'm sorry I'm making things so complicated because I just don't understand these things like Permissions. I do run backups with paid version of Paragon. I actually downloaded and installed Macrium free version, but I haven't used it yet.

When I go to this registry key (HKCR\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}\InprocServer32} and right click on it, selected Owner's tab, it now shows that TrustedInstaller is the current owner.

But why do all those other items have a checkmark in the full control option, and why, under the Permissions tab/Permission Entries, does it show all those items with full control and inherited control, etc., as shown on the screenshots. So, I'm wondering if I have things right even though it shows TrustedInstaller as the owner.

Owners and permsissions are not the same. If installer is the owner you are fine, the permissions are something else.

As you can see from my screenshots, there are a lot of things that have full control "inherited from parent object" which I don't think should probably be in place. I know I fumbled around a lot when I was taking ownership and I suppose I did something wrong. The only thing that concerns me is opening a door for malware or virus by the way I've left the settings.

Thanks for responding. If there's something you think of that I should do to protect this key let me know.

What you and eveyone should do is make an image. I use Macrium and it saved me. If you have an image, you can change anything that you like without consequence.
I think that you are OK, now though.

And we come to another set of terms I am totally confused about. What I do with Paragon is a FULL backup image. But then there is cloning, and for that you need to use an external hard drive that is at least as large as your computer hard drive and you shouldn't have anything on it except the cloned backup of your computer. Is this correct?

If I'm understanding right, which is the best and easiest if you ever have to use the backup? I've read that the clone is, but I don't know. When I installed Macrium I was thinking about getting another external and trying the clone image.

Right now I have an Iomege USB2 external hard drive 320 MG and that is what I put the Paragon backups on, plus other things I store on it.

Since I use Macrium and it has saved me, why dont we start there.
Make a back up image. I can help you as well as this tutorial
Imaging with free Macrium - Windows 7 Forums
An image will serve you just fine, no need to worry about clone now.
Make it now and back up once a month and you will not have problems again, that cant be solved.

I think I am going to be gone tomorrow, but after that soon I will definitely try this. I assume I can put the backup on the same external as my Paragon is on. If I have trouble, expect to hear from me. ;>)

You gave me the bug so I wanted to get started. I thought I would at least make the backup CD, but then in that link you gave me, "whoever" says I can go to his Skydrive site and download a ready-made iso of the WinPE Recovery Disk. Then all I have to do is unzip it, burn it to a disk and I'm ready to go.

Now is there anything involved here that "whoever" is assuming I will know, which I don't?

My only comment is that I made the boot CD right from Macrium. I downloaded the ISO and then with ImgBrn, made my CD.
I did test it and it works.

Shouldn't all new CDs be formatted before using?

I want to format a CD to use for bootable disk for Macrium. Should I use CD-R or CD-RW?

Instructions say to insert the blank CD and in the dialog box that appears, click Burn files to disc.

I inserted both types of disks in both of the drives I have and no dialog box appears.

I did download and install ImgBurn but can't make heads nor tails of it. I have Roxio on my computer and that seems much more simple.
