Accessing Vista Administrator account

Hello folks,
I hope someone can point me in the right direction here.... my usual user account on vista is very limited - I can't even send items to the recycle bin without it freaking out! But when I click on the Administrator account tab (on start up), the 'welcome' message displays, as does the round swirly symbol to show it's processing - but then - NOTHING! The message continues to be displayed and nothing else happens!! I just don't know what's going on, is the fault with the computer processor or hard drive, as opposed to the actual software?
Any ideas?
