Windows XP End of an Era Win 7 upgrade advisor

On 8/4/12 downloaded this upgrade, ran the Advisor, made registry backup to desktop...this changed a LOT of stuff on my pc. Now when I click on the Reg. backup and click on Merge to restore the registry, I get this message:

Cannot import C:\Users\Barbara\Desktop\Registry Backup 8-4-12.reg:
Error accessing the registry.

I have tried this a couple of times (stupidity-same results :o).
Now I've been reading on how to correctly install and there's no help for me here it seems.

Can someone tell me how to either get my registry restored or get on with the Win. 7 install...or have I done that already?

I got this update advice from WorldStart.com. In future will check with this site before I do something like this again.

Thanks.

The procedure is very easy Barbara. All you have to do is make sure that you are set to boot from the CD

My advice is based upon my understanding that you want to install Seven. If not please explain in a little more detail, exactly what you want to do now, forget the past.

Running the Upgrade Advisor so far as I know makes no changes to the registry at all.

How did you create this registry backup? Some websites suggest methods which will always give rise to the error you are seeing.

As I recall, when I ran the advisor, it said my PC was compatible/ready/able, and I click on install/download/whatever. It may the registry backup, put it on the desktop, and now I can't go back.

I know that sounds a little crazy, but I'm 73, and unless I write every single thing I do down, step by step, I can't remember all the details...have just told y'all what I wrote/remember. Any futher help appreciated. thanks.

Do you mean a CD for Windows 7? I don't have that...I downloaded the Advisor, ran it, and now I can't go back by 'merging' the registry backup the program made. thanks.

If you got the proper Upgrade Advisor, then one of the prime functions of it is to be able to run it again, to check that all recommended actions have been properly carried out (or not).

As far as I know, if that doesn't happen, you have either a corrupted isntall, or malware.
