System Restore

I tried to run a restore, but I cannot get any older dates to restore from. I did create a new restore point, but that only allows a restore from the present date and time. It seems that all restore dates are removed at the end of the day. I could restore on my windows xp version, but not on vista. Advice would be most appreciated.

Welcome
This can be caused by several reasons:
Not enough room to create new points
Points being erased by malware
Points being erased by some software on your computer, eg ccleaner
Points being deleted by malfunctions, such as an I/O from the Hard Drive

Run an anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes
Boot in clean boot and see if the problem persists
Go to seach type event viewer, go to custom views> administrative on left panel and look for errors that may apply.

Hi Rich, I looked at ccleaner and noticed in Applications "Last Download Location". I have that ticked. Is that causing the problem, if so I'll untick it.

No, thats not it. Ccleaner has a provision to erase all but the last restore point. I do not think its ccleaner, but was given as an example of some software that you may have that is causing the problem.
Go to event viwer as suggested.

Hi Richard, in event viewer I found "Failed to inintiate System Restore (Revo Uninstaller's restore point - Perfect Uninstaller v6.3.3.9)
Is this the problem?

That could be a symptom of the problem. That says that a point was not made, you say that you can find older points that were already created.
Go into clean boot and try that for a while and see if you SR works better.

When in doubt, you can always check what restore points you have with this Command Prompt command

vssadmin list shadows

It will list all restore points by date.

There is a big storm here and the power went down. We started the generator and are now back on line. I checked the restore points just now, and the last restore point I created on 30/10/2012 is still there! It is the only one. So maybe it is now fixed?

The only way to tell is to wait and see if it is still there a few days from now.
Im in the NYC area, a storm just left, it was very bad here.

Your storm was the storm of the century. We watched it on tv and were horrified. Any damage to your place? I hope you are OK. I am in australia and we are having bad weather today. I went out this morning to feed the animals and was blown over. The power is still down, probably a tree on the powerlines.

4 100 ft trees down. One is 20 feet from the house. Neighbor wants money for his damaged fence.
Town has 80% not elecricity
All schools and Town closed for entire week
Worst that I ever experienced. Hope that you stay safe.
NYC no subways, tunnels and bridges closed
Stock Exchange closed for 2 days.

Wow, 100ft trees! That will take some cleaning up! Has the neighbour any chance (rights) of getting money for damage to his fence, caused by a major storm? Even if the trees are on a neighbouring property?
No electicity is going to be very difficult. Traffic also. And all that water has to be pumped out. The closing of the stockexchange is going to have a global effect.

I wonder how the insurance companies are going to react!

If you get nothing, you have no restore points.
