Black triangles next to folder icons

What operating system are you using?
Have you installed any software that lets you change the appearance of your desktop items such as an animated cursor toolbar or tweaking utility?

See if there is something running in Task Manager that seems unusual for Windows.

Hi,
I am using Vista.
No I have not installed any software that lets you change the appearance of your desktop items such as an animated cursor toolbar or tweaking utility. I tried folder settings, but no result. Where exctly in task manager should I look?

thanks, Liglin

If you're not that familiar with Task Manager then they'll all look foreign to you. If you can provide a pic of the Processes tab in Task Manager, I can try to get some ideas from your running processes. Some questions:

1) Did the icons suddenly appear there or have they always been there?

2) Assuming they just appeared, when did they appear and what had you been doing just prior to them appearing?

3) Are there other icons that have changed? Possibly some icon that is a little more unique than a triangle. If so, could you please provide a picture?

4) Do you have any file management programs installed? Which one(s)?

I'm just looking for clues to help. I haven't found anything with what you've provided so far.

1. They have always been there
2. -
3. Not others that have changed
4. No file management programs installed.

I have tried Tools Folder options View, but couldn't change those icons...

thanks for your effort to help.

Your photo shows the triangles looking a little differently from what I see on my system.

As you can see, I never see both triangles (black and gray) coupled together. Gray shows that sub folders exist, and black indicates a folder that has been opened.

If the representation of the triangles you see has been like that since you can remember, there must be some kind of alternate theme chosen or the images used for those mini icons were changed somehow. In any case, if they have always been this way for you, why are you feeling the need to change them at this point?

If they do bother you enough that you really want to change them, then perhaps you should look into folder icon customization. The article mentions a tool you can use to change them, which may provide a way to change the open/closed indicators.

Liglin,

I know of no themes on Vista that use those icons. I suspect that another program installed and possibly running on your computer may change them on its own. Could you provide a snapshot, pic, or list of the processes running on your computer.

To get to the processes:

Right-click any empty space on your taskbar and choose Task Manager.

Select the Processes tab.

Expand the window enough to include the Description column. This will show us a list of what programs are currently loaded into memory and running.
