Solved xps document writer erratic behaviour

Hi, People,

Just joined in the hope someone has a solution to this. My wife has a Vista Home Premium laptop on which she runs Quickbooks 5 for our Church accounts. In the past when sending printouts of balance sheets etc. to other members by email she was only able to use text files. For correct layout and formatting, it had to be snail mail. But I realised (yesterday!) that by using the xps document writer the printouts could be transmitted as email attachments and retain their original layouts and format.

BUT

When attempting to print using the xps writer (which happily appears in the printer choice box) we get the error message " Could not print to printer. Check your printer selection. Printing may have been cancelled by another program".

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling dot net 3.5 also the xps document writer itself to no avail. The xps writer works correctly with other programs for example Microsoft Word.

I thought it might be a problem with Quickbooks, so tried it with an installation on my XP laptop. I had to install dot net 3.5, but then it behaved perfectly, although if I cancel the save dialog I then get the error message which would appear to be particular to Intuit - the suppliers of Quickbooks. It does not appear if I cancel the save dialog in Word.

OK, for the occasions when the feature is needed I can transfer the files to my laptop and produce an xps document there. But not exactly satisfactory!

About the only difference in the printer setup between the two computers is that at the moment my XP laptop doesn't have any other printer installed.

Any ideas??

Thanks, Peter.

No response so far alas. But it seems strange that the file will 'write' in XP but not in Vista. Does anyone know where the Vista xps writer driver loader is located? Maybe if I (temporarily!) remove those files, I can get Vista to use the files supplied in dot net 3.5 They obviously worked in XP so maybe..... Incidentally I now have a 'true' printer installed on my laptop, and the xps writer still works ok, so no conflict there.

Cheers,

Peter.

OK guys, forget it. One of the past threads which this clever forum showed up gave me a link to 'Cutepdf writer' And that DOES work with the accounting package in Vista.

Useful resource is this forum! Many thanks. So although the original glitch is still there, no problemo!

Peter.
