Hi folks, I had just re-installed VHP using the recovery partition taking it back to the initial conf.as when I brought it. The process worked well.I have spent the last two days getting the OS up-dated with Windows up-date. All went well and got it up-dated to where SP2 could be installed.....at the very end of that process a message told me SP2 was not installed and went into a process of reverting back to pre- install.
The computer shut down and rebooted to the log on screen...Only to give me the message that my account has been deleted and the OS needs to be installed this disk!!! Well I don't have one and any repair or restore(f8,f2,f10,safemode) action results in the same message. ALL that work and time!!!!!!!!!! Suggestions ,Can anyone help:mad:

Had you activated the operating system after you initially installed it?

You do have a functioning computer in order to post here. I suggest going to the tutorials section and learning about creating a repair/restore/rescue disk and then use that on your troubled computer.

Well my question is moot...I don't know exactly how but I was able to recover the OS.
I have up-dated all windows updates including SP2.The computer seems to function OK with one expeption....It will not complete a defrag cycle with either the internal program or any 3rd party program. It stalls about 20% into the process. SFC nor chkdsk has not indicated any issues. All the programs complete the analysis but not defrag. The internal program says no need to defrag.......Defraggler indicates 1% fragmented and Auslogic 10..???

Thank You for the follow-up.This forum has been soooo helpful for me. Thanks Again..

You're welcome, rickory--glad to see you got over the hurdle. Sometimes it takes a little longer to get there than we expect (I've been there, done that).

The built-in defragmentation utility is rather weak. Most of them are, in the free mode. Auslogics is OK and it's the one I currently use. The most important thing is to have at least 20% free disk space, in order for it to work efficiently. But sometimes it won't resolve some fragmented files, despite plenty of space to do so. What you can do is look at the report and sort descending by fragmentation. For larger files (at least over 1Mb) that have many dozens of fragments, what I do is make a copy of the file, delete the original, then move the copy back into its place. This way the data is on another part of the disk and not fragmented. This usually works.

As for defragmentation not completing, I've seen this happen from time to time. It's no big deal, as the defrag program can be stopped at any time without losing progress. The key is keeping integrity of the last file being defragmented. Any decent defrag tool will be good about that.
