Gateway MT3705 - Replaced motherboard and then:

When I tried to reformat the with the factory disk the computer would restart for no reason. Some times the system would freeze. The next step was i changed the boot order, making the DVD drive first, same. Next step was starting in safe mode, then running the format CD in safe mode. This worked, no freezes, no mystery restarts until the first time the computer had to restart to complete the formatting. Upon restart I got the classic Hal.dll error.

C:\Windows\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Updating the BOOT Manager failed so I picked up another HDD. Now, the system still freezes trying to reformat unless I'm in safe mode, but the system will no longer has the hal.dll problem.

Here is my problem, when the computer restarts to finish the install, it freezes. What stopped the computer from freezing during the first stages running in safe mode? Why would the system freeze in the first place? Can I make the system stay in safe mode through all the restarts involved with reformatting?
