Taskbar icon won't go away

Running Vista Home Premium x64 SP2.

This week an icon showed up in my task bar and I can't get rid of it, don't recall installing any programs to trigger this. Right click does nothing, Task manager(applications) doesn't show the program, so I can't end task, and I don't see any processes(unnecessary) that would be attached to this. When I Alt+Tab, it shows "Desktop" with a small window in the lower right hand corner.

I have attached pictures, if that helps.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It may not show as an application, but it will show as a process. It'll be hard to figure out exactly which, as there are usually many processes.

Does this process always appear after you do a full system restart? If so, check your "Startup" folder and the program/process list in msconfig for anything suspicious.

I agree as to the malware scan. As for looking at processes try Process Explorer

Ran Malware Bytes and then Kaspersky. No viruses or malware found. Went to msconfig-Startup and disabled Java, Netextender, WPNSCFG, Apple Push, and PDANET. And it disappeared. So, looks like it was one of those. I will have to figure out which one later. I was just worried my machine was infected, but doesn't appear to be the case. Thanks for all you input.

Glad to hear that you were able to narrow it down, and that your computer is clean of malware/viruses. :)
