connecting esata external HDD causes system freeze?

hi

i have an extnal HDD with an esata port and an esata port on the side of my pc i tried to connect the 2 of hem with an esata cable however when i clicked on my computer to see/use the drive the MY COMPUTER window went greyed over and system was unresponsive had to hold power button down to force shut down.

i am unsure if it something to do with bios settings or drivers or hardware

acer aspire r3600 (nvidia storage controller driver)
