hi

i have now run sfc command three times each time it says it has repaired files?
yet when i re-scan it says it has found files that need repair?
does this just mean there are more files need repair or the same file keeps corrupting or is it that it has not really been fixed ?

see enclosed sfc scan results txt file below

thanks

hi brink thanks for reply

that sfc txt file contains details of the last 3 sfc scans.(see timestamps) however when i ran for 2nd and 3rd times it still reported files corupt and fixed then run sfc scan again and it found more but from what i could tell they where the same files as where repaired the 1st and 2nd time. so wondered have they been fixed and then re-corrupted after the fix or has the 2nd and 3rd scans found more files or did it not really fix 1st 2nd times? if you see what i mean?

thanks for help and advice shawn much apreciated..

as for clean boot i did try that the other day and started ok and shutdown ok for a while then later that evening problem re-occurred however i will try again and report back
just to note this is a recent clean installation have not really installed any of my files and programs yet just a couple mentioned/reccomended by other vf members (macrium reflect and revo uninstaller) other tan that (browser and adobe flash) thats about it so dont really know what programs have caused the corruption to files as it was workin ok just after clean win re-install and just prior to installing (macrium reflect and revo uninstaller)

thanks again for taking the time to help. much apreciated

thanks

hi brink run the clean boot again i think i may have a possible cause see screens below :
i did 4 clean boots each time selecting/de-selecting a different group of services
clean boot 1 just norton GOOD 20 sec shutdown 55sec boot
clean boot 2 norton plus bottom 3 BAD force shutdown required
clean boot 3 norton plus top 3 BAD force shutdown required
clean boot 4 everything except NVIDIA display driver FORCEWARE IP service and FORCEWARE intelligent aplication manager (IAM) GOOD

so i think it is related to those three as with everything else selected booted ok whenever they where included it failed shutdown.
also maybe worth mentioning usually on my dads pc when ive had to force shutdown on that i get windows did not shutdown properly message at next boot. with options to start normally or in safe mode etc..
when im forcing these shutdowns on my pc im not getting that message at next boot
(suggesting it is shutting down properly before the hang???) i assume..

does this shed any light on the matter ?

I would say uninstall Norton, and use Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) to see how you do for a bit. It sure looks like Norton may be the issue here.

hi brink

why do i need to remove norton? shutdown was good when norton was only service selected see screen 1

only time shutdown was bad was when nvidia or nforce services where selected? see screen

also on the norton side of things that was installed and running fine a week before this issue started?

thanks

Norton takes time to screw things up royally :)

Uninstall it, and run the removal tool for that and also run the cleanup tools for any previous Anti-Virus programs, then install MSE, and see how things go for a few days.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

hi noel thanks for your reply

however on the norton side of things i have it on my pc my and dads pc and have had on my dads pc for 4yrs or more and never caused a problem before.
the issue im having seems to be related to the nvidia and nforce services as when they are selected the problem occurs not when norton is selected. see provided screenshots.

thanks

Billy,

It's just that we have seen and continue to see Norton at the root of many odd issues.

As for the NVIDIA driver, be sure to completely uninstall it. If you are using the latest version, then you might try a different version number to see if it may work better for you.

You might also adjust your shutdown time in case it may be to low or high.

hi shawn
i can appreciate that however the machine was running fine with norton and as i say my dads machine has had it dor 4yrs or more with no trouble performance wise and no virus etc

As for the NVIDIA driver, be sure to completely uninstall it. If you are using the latest version, then you might try a different version number to see if it may work better for you.

completely uninstall all nviia stuff or just certain drivers. and leave uninstalled or re-install? when you say completely remove (using windows programs features or an uninstaller such as revo?)

as for version i am unsure what version but i can re-install nvida ion chipset and graphics drivers from acer or from nvidia site? unsure wich is newer or best?

You might also adjust your shutdown time in case it may be to low or high.

i have not changed anything like that. but i will check anyway to see what it is set to. what is an acceptable ammount? how will i know if its to high etc and what to lower it to?

thanks shawn i really apreciate the help

Billy,

No problem. If you're happy with Norton, then that's fine. It's just that we run across a lot of folks that have issues from it for whatever reason, and when uninstalled, no more problem.

From what you have listed, I would say only the NVIDIA ION video drivers. The latest version is 310.70 WHQL at the NVIDIA link below. Be sure to select your correct series. You can uninstall the old one from "Programs and Features".
The tutorial for the shutdown time will give you a recommended time to use. I wouldn't go below that. If it's set to high, you'll see more of what you are seeing now with a long or hanging shutdown period.

hi shawn

thanks. i have always been ok with it thus far. also i have paid for license etc if i still experience problems after this then i will defintely start to think that is to blame. just because it has always been fine on my dads and has been fine on mine does not mean it still is. so if the steps you suggest dont fix then i will lok at norton morlossely.thanks shawn

ok but not the forceware ones then? there ok to leave installed.. thanks shawn and thankyou fr the link much appreciated
