Desktop Problems - Blank/Black Screen

Hi all,

This is my first post so fingers crossed i'm in the right place. I run a fairly basic Dell machine with Vista Home Basic. Here is my problem:

I enter my user account password(i am the only user on the computer) and the desktop loads up.

About 50% of the time the desktop loads and then goes black. I have no mouse cursor and the Ctrl+Alt etc combinations do nothing. The monitor stays on which suggests that the computer is still sending some sort of signal so i don't know if this is a display problem or something more sinister. I have tried to follow advice on different forums and have yet to fix the issue.

I changed the desktop wallpaper, I removed and then re-installed the display drivers and neither of these suggestions helped. Is it possible that it has something to do with the power settings? Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a driver problem - but it could be the file system

SFC -System File Checker -Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages -and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created(C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate itdirectly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Publicfolder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Since he can't even see the cursor, I suspect either the graphics or the display.

He might try running Hardware and Devices from Microsoft Fix It.

I boot up my Compaq Presario containing Vista Home Basic as my OS. It goes through the booting cycle. Just before it gets to the active desktop, I get a black screen with a still cursor showing on my monitor. When I move the mouse around, the cursor moves with the motion of the mouse. That's as far as it get. What do I do?
