Question RE: sfc /scannow

What is going on when you run the sfc /scannow, it gives you the following message, but after restart you run it again and it says the same thing? When I restart, for just a couple of seconds a page comes up that says: Configuring Updates ... Do not shut off your computer.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>SFC /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot

Hello Nikilet,

The "configuring updates..." message is just to let you know that it is finishing up on installing Windows Updates that were installed and needed a restart to finalize.

If you like, see the yellow Tip box at the top of the tutorial below, and post back with your uploaded sfcdetails.txt file. I'll be happy to take a look at it to see what SFC is doing for you.

Brink, I'm sure that "Configuring Updates" is not due to Windows Updates. None have been installed and I've run this sfc /scannow 5 times today and then restarted. Every time I run it has told me that the files were successfully repaired, and then when I restart I get that "Configuring Updates" on the blue screen for just a couple seconds.

Thank you for the instruction on how to get this log. I am attaching it so you can take a look at it.

Thank you.

SFC scans certain system files for errors and with the /scannow flag it will automatically replace them with a good copy if corrupt. It is a potentially useful tool if you are experiencing problems (depending upon the problem) however if you are not then you don't need to bother running it. If you just want to check your files you might want to run sfc /verifyonly instead.

I am having some problems and that is why I ran the sfc command. I think I will run the verify command and see what it says. Thank you.

I just tried to run the sfc /verifyonly and it is telling me that there is a system repair pending which requires a reboot. I didn't reboot after the last time I ran it because it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

I'm back again with more to add. I restarted and ran sfc /verifyonly and the result was that integrity violations had been found.
