Solved Windows not genuine?

Jeceris

Member
After several years of using my current laptop without any problems, I have suddenly got a message in the bottom right of my screen saying "Windows Vista (TM) BUILD 6002 This copy of Windows is not genuine". It has never appeared before and everything comes up normally.
My not be relevant but it is coincident with my Norton licence expiring which I have now renewed.
Is the message genuine?
How do I ensure I am legal and how do I get rid of the message?

Welcome
Go to the computer icon on your desktop (if not there go to search by the start button, type computer and bring it to desktop). Right click on computer and then properties. Do you see the genuine emblem, bottom, right?
If the emblem is not present, type activate windows, in search by the start button. If you are validated, it will indicate that activation was successful.
If both methods give you bad news, try to activate online. If not successful, you will be given a number to call.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
How to Tell
If you can't access the desktop....

If you do not have access to the Start Button:
1) Login to Vista and click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.
2) Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.
3) A window will come up asking if you want to “Run” or “Save”, Select “Run”
4) When the program runs, click the “Continue” button, then click the “Copy” button (IGNORE any error messages at this point).
5) Return to this thread
6) In a reply post, paste the Diagnostic Report (by right-click select Paste or by using Ctrl+V)

There's no sign of any activation or validation problem with the report - are you still seeing the notifications?
The tool has a limited repair capability, so it may have fixed things.

If you are still seeing problems, try validating at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer - if it fails, post back with another MGADiag report.

After sending you the report and awaiting a reply, I rebooted and got a warning before Windows came up that my Product Code had not been activated. I clicked on Activate and keyed it in again, which immediately activated Windows and loaded everything up correctly. Also the original warning bottom right of screen has disappeared. Somewhere, somehow, something had obliterated my Product Code. I wonder if it's connected with the renewal of my Norton Antivirus licence since both issues occurred at the same time.
Anyway many thanks for your help.

Have you run the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of the immense amount of dross that Norton leaves behind?
It interferes with most AV's, including newer versions of Norton!

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/nor...10133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

then post another MGADiag report.

Yes I did, but didn't see any specific instructions about what needed to be done to reinstall, except for this - "After you run the Norton Removal Tool and restart the computer, you will be reinstalling your Norton product from your Norton Account. Make sure that you have access to your Norton Account." However I followed my nose and it was reinstalled, so I'm back where I was, and again thanks for your help.
Did the report I sent reveal anything significant?
