Vista Won't allow new Brother 7360 to be set as default ....HELP Please

I am running Windows Vista 64bit, I installed a new printer (brother all in one 7360N). This is a great printer, but Vista will not allow me to set as default and therefore not allowed to print certain things(email, adobe). I have talked with Brother customer service, and we have installed/reinstalled all drivers and have done as much as I can with the printer. I do know now that this is a Vista issue, not the printer/driver issue. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. At this point I am about to throw this computer against the wall. BTW it DOES do test prints, and also will print if it will allow a drop down and select printer. Thanks in advance!

It would be helpful if you filled out the system specs in detail. Does your Vista have a Service Pack? If so which one? Vista before SP1 had problems with printer assignment. For example connecting to a network printer required the old trick of creating a virtual port, such as LPT1, and assigning the printer to it.

I believe if you click on Start button, then right click on Computer then left click on Properties. It should say the OS with the particulars, such as Service Pack 1 etc..

I'm using a public library computer and right click is disabled. I can't try it before posting. So I have to go from memory. If it doesn't work perhaps someone will chime in. But I think I'm correct at least as far as service pack level goes.

It might be helpful if you post a screen shot of the Printers window. How is the printer connected?

Most printers wont function properly without you first installing their software and drivers, did you do that? Also uninstall anything applying to your old printer.

Yes everything was installed correctly with CD, I was on phone with Brother cust svc for an hour, they finally said it was a Vista issue. So now I'm here to see if anyone else can help on the Vista side

If you uninstall the printer driver, then plug in the printer to the USB port, does it install a driver? Some printers have the driver permanently in firmware.

edit: Make sure you have the cable plugged into the printer and the printer powered up before you plug the cable into the USB port. If the driver is internal it should pop up a dialog about installing a driver.
