Solved Icons on shortcuts gone generic and links not working

Hi

On my Vista Home Premium PC I have a strange problem, some of the desktop icons have changed to a generic look, no longer showing the program they are attached to, for example Adobe reader and Casper 8 are just plain, look the same except for the name.

Also the Start/Word shortcut does not start word, also going to the Start/New Office Document shortcut does nothing.

Many other shortcuts have gone the same way but they do work, the Office shortcuts are the only ones that do not open the program.

If I double click on a Word or Excel file it opens okay.

I have the latest updates and have MSE running always, Spybot, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware run weekly.

I'm not sure where to go with this, any advice would be appreciated.

If you create new shortcuts directly from the .exe file of the current shortcuts that do not work, do the new one's work?

all the shortcuts except the Office ones work, it's just that some are plain, without program related icons.

When I rightclick on my desktop and select new shortcut, nothing happens.

I have created a desktop shortcut by rightclicking on WinWord.exe and selecting create shortcut, then
I pinned it to the start menu and it is working.

I am wondering what caused the problem in the first place.

As a test, download and merge the .reg file for the listed lnk (LNK) option in the tutorial below to see if it may help if it's some sort of association or registry entry issue for .lnk files.
