Hi

When I 1st start my computer my hard drive is running like there is no tomorrow. It causes delays when loading Exployer 9 etc. I figure there is a file that is havin trouble loading, just haven't been able to locate it. After 5 minutes it calms down and everything works fine. I might add no speed issues once it calms down. The reason I think it is a file or some type of program I ran System File Checker tool and everthing is Ok. Not getting any error messages. I've checked for malware and viruses, clean. The only think I can provide, when booting, I get a high spike in CPU and memory usuage.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32. All updates have been installed. Drivers are up-todate. I have 2 GB memory.

I hope I'm in the right place. Any help Would be much appreciated.

You have Service Pack 1 or equivalent then? One thing that can cause Vista to run the HD is if you have WMP set to share media over the network. It will look through all the files on the HD for media files to catalog. Another thing is indexing. If your HD is NTFS only then you can search using the Everything Search program with no indexing. Thereby allowing you to turn indexing off. Everything Search uses the MFT structures to get the info without indexing. But it only works on NTFS.

With Vista it can be a number of things. When I got my first Vista machine it took me about 2 months to learn all I needed to know to stop my HD from thrashing. It seemed like everyone but me could use the drive. :)

First thing I would try is the WMP settings. Set your network not to share media files via WMP.

I tried disabling all programs so I could perform the clean boot, noticed Norton 360 would restart everytime I disabled it. I decided to diable the antivirus for time frame permanent and do a clean boot. It did improve. My guess is when I first start up, Norton 360 is running a check of sorts. It lasts for a couple of minutes. Guess my issues have to do with Norton 360. I appreciate your help. Both of you gave me a point to start narrowing it down.

If you should decide to uninstall Norton, check for a Removal Tool. Often just doing the uninstall leaves references in the registry to load drivers that have been deleted from the system. I checked the boot log on my Vista64 machine since no matter what I did, it was taking 120 seconds to boot. Turns out it was timing out waiting for Norton drivers to load. I had to run the Removal Tool 3 or 4 times to get rid of the driver load attempts.
