Vista basic or Premium ?

Hi, I have been given an Acer Aspire 5315, virtually unused. After playing with it I replaced the CPU added more Ram and changed the Wireless card from a g to an n. Also replaced the Thermal tape with a copper shim.
The original OS was Vista and had been pass worded which I didn't bother trying to bypass I just installed Win7.
I then decided to install Vista Basic as that was what the COA on the under side was.
I also have an Acer Vista Premium upgrade disc which comes with its own COA.
My question is , is it worth upgrading? Am I going to benefit from it?
cheers,
Eddie.

Foiled by the fickle fingers of fate!

If you had the premium and were not going to use it for anything else then I'd personally upgrade.

Have a look on the following page, there is a comparison chart about half way down the page - Windows Vista editions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Had a read and really couldn't see any advantage, but as I had no other use for it decided to go ahead and upgrade.
No go says Windows. It offered to do a clean install but no upgrade. It would appear the Basic version is younger than the upgrade. After thinking about it I realised that the upgrade was from my Wifes Acer 5633 which originally had XP and therefore the upgrade would have worked.
Ah well, such is life. ( said Ned Kelly as they put the noose around his head) .
Thanks for your help,
cheers,
Eddie.

Sorry, misunderstood.

So now you have Vista Basic installed and want to upgrade to Premium. How are you trying the upgrade? It haas to be run from a booted Vista Basic. You can't upgrade if you boot the DVD/flash drive.

As stated Windows refuses to upgrade because the Basic is younger than the Premium. I can install the Upgrade from the OOD if I use the double install method, i.e. first install sans number. I didn't want to go through the whole process of install plus hours and hours of updates and then fine tuning on top of that.
I admit though that the Basic is pretty good, from what I have seen.
cheers,
Eddie.

You may be able to get it to work if you right click Setup.exe on the dvd and run it in compatibility mode.

Because it replaces all the os files , you would still need to get all the updates afterwards, however.

I have made updated installation media , with updates to 1/10/13. Works great for clean install and repair/upgrade. It is bigger and adds about 10 mins to the installation time. ( Only done the 64 bit HomeBasic and HomePremium so far, might have a go at 32 bit soon ).
