Vista Ultimate Activation Problem

I'm trying to figure out how to get activation key for Vista Ultimate. My PC is pretty old, I had my friend build it in 2007, and about 2 years later I turned it on and it said that I needed to activate it ("Windows Vista Build 6002 not genuine", which it doesn't say that anymore). Every time I turn it on, I log in and it says to activate so I just choose "activate later" and it's been fine, but recently I ran an update, hoping my PC would run a little smoother, and now I think the fact that it's not activated has finally kicked in and it says "13 days left" or something. I still have my product key in the system but apparently it's not legit (not sure if my friend used a legit copy or not and I could never get a hold of him 4 years ago when it initially happened.

I guess Microsoft doesn't sell Vista Product Keys anymore, nor do they sell Windows 7 upgrades via download. I cant afford to go through the hassle of buying windows 7 or 8 and doing a complete clean installation, possibly losing some data and not being able to re-set up some recording interfaces and I don't have the money.

So here's my diagnostic report. It looks like my product is genuine, so why am I having this problem? How can I fix this? What other information would be valuable for you guys?

thanks!

As far as I know contacting Microsoft is the only way to get Windows reactivated. When you get a prompt for activation there should be an option to call them. When you select that you'll get a phone number appropriate to your area. You can also try automatic activation.
