When I select "Sleep" the PC goes into the mode for about 5-6 seconds (modem light flashing) and then comes back to life ? once in a while it will stay snoozing but very seldom is there a setting that can be made??

Are you connected to internet by broadband to ethernet interface/card? If so check in Device Manager. Right click on the network card and click Properties. See if it says something like "Allow to wake system on network activity."

Just look in Device Manager for whatever networking is there. Right click on it and select properties. It should say if wake on activity is enabled.

One by one untick the methods to wake the computer. In that way you can determine the cause of the problem.
