Windows Photo Gallery and Long URL Problem

At least I am of the belief it is the length of the URL that is causing the problem. If I'm mistaken about that, please correct me.

This discussion froma few years ago highlights the problem and solution.

http://www.vistax64.com/vista-music...windows-photo-gallery-my-vista-desktop-2.html

That thread is quite old, so I thought I'd better start a new thread.

What I am trying to find out is why this is happening?

I might also add that changing the shortcut's URL to fewer characters does not seem to work. Still have top move the "weird" shortcut out of the folder to get the Windows Photo Gallery to properly work.

So I am not looking for the solution to the problem, but I am wondering if anyone has figured the 'why' of it?

And if my search wasn't done properly and I missed where the 'why' is posted, please excuse me.

Thank you.

I thought the other thread was clear, but if it needs summarizing, no problem.

There has been a situation identified for a few years where if one sticks a shortcut with a very long URL into a folder that has some images, the images will not be viewed (when doing the usual double-click) in Windows Photo Gallery until the weird shortcut is removed from the folder.

What I am asking here is if anyone knows the why of this behaviour. I've not seen anyone post an explanation for this behaviour. And there are quite a few places where the advice is offered, and it is advice that works. So I just have a curiosity as to why this weird shortcut problem affects the use of Windows Photo Gallery. No big problem, just curiosity, that's all.

In windows there is a character limit of 260 for the entire path and file name. File names and file name extensions: frequently asked questions - Microsoft Windows Help

But I am trying to figure out why that weird shortcut with the long URL affects only the image files inside the same folder. I can open up a .txt or .rtf file with no problem, if that weird shortcut is in the folder. But .jpg and .bmp files won't open.

As soon as I move that weird shortcut out of that folder everything is back to being as one would expect.

Hi,

I was asking you to upload the file (Shortcut) in a zip file format.

This will then be investigated with the problem item.

OK?

Let me first break this down into the separate parts of the test case so all will get a clear picture of how to create this weirdness.

First, though, I wish to add another link to a discussion at Microsoft Answers about this same oddity.
vista-windows photo gallery won't open .jpg on desktop but will in - Microsoft Community

Timestamps are of note, because it indicates the oddity has been around for a few years. The thread for which I posted the link in the OP is dated mid 2008 and the Microsoft Answers thread is dated late 2009.

I think the best thing for anyone to do is follow these few steps.

Create a folder, maybe label it, Test_Folder

Inside that create a folder, maybe titled, Trouble_Shortcut_Folder.

Stick one normal .jpg image and one normal .bmp image into Test_Folder.

The shortcut for this exercise is one I saved on September 15th, 2012 without realizing it had such a long URL/URI —— 459 characters, of which the URL encoding for the query string is 301 characters.

http[://www.]dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2202979/Benghazi-attack-U-S-consulate-pictured-Libyan-attack-revealed-officials-knew-attack-plans-48-HOURS-before.html?openGraphAuthor=%2Fhome%2Fsearch.html%3Fs%3D%26authornamef%3DBeth%2BStebner&videoPlayerURL=http%3A%2F%2Fc.brightcove.com%2Fservices%2Fviewer%2Ffederated_f9%3FisVid%3D1%26isUI%3D1%26publisherID%3D1418450360%26playerID%3D72484359001%26domain%3Dembed%26videoId%3D&hasBCVideo=true&BCVideoID=1839768440001

That is a valid shortcut, but I don't want a hyperlink of such length on this website because I don't want to take any chances of causing problems here.

The brackets in red should keep that from becoming a hyperlink. And if you do a character count yourself, remember the two brackets I added makes that total 461. I'm trying to be as specific as possible, for some who want it that way.

So we put that shortcut with that super long URL into the folder titled "Test_Folder" with those two images and we then double click on either of those two images and Windows Photo Gallery will do zip, zero, nothing. Kind of like my cat after paw licking after dinner —— lifeless.

Now we put that shortcut into the folder titled "Trouble_Shortcut_Folder" and go back to "Test_folder" and try our double click on those images and there is no problem.

So we know that the super long URL in that shortcut is blocking Windows Photo Gallery in some way. We know how to unblock that, by removing the shortcut from that folder. That part of the situation we understand. No problem.

So what I am asking about here, for anyone who may also have a curiosity like I have, is why those shortcuts with those long URLs are blocking Windows Photo Gallery from working.

As for the request for a zip file transfer: it isn't necessary, because one can remove the query string and use the "normal" URL to get to the Daily Mail page with that article and then make a shortcut from that and then pull up the properties file of the new shortcut, "Web Document" tab, remove the normal URL and insert that weird long URL —— pull it from a paste in Notepad (my brackets removed) —— and "Apply" and then you have the original shortcut I have from 2012 and I would suggest to be very careful to keep track of where that weird shortcut is, like in the test folder we created.

I think what Townsbg said about the length has some validity.

I can't paste that link into any Vista folder. I can paste it into Word. I didn't try removing the red marks.

I think what Townsbg said about the length has some validity.

We are all cognizant of the fact that the length of the URL within the shortcut is causing the disruption to the normal manner that Windows Photo Gallery functions when that particular shortcut is in the same folder with the images that are not opening in Windows Photo Gallery. There is no doubt on that point. That is noted in both the threads I have referenced here.

What I am asking / wondering is why that long URL causes problems for Window Photo Gallery. The actual "how" of the disruption of the normal relationship between the images and Windows Photo Gallery.

As for that pasting in a Vista folder bit, the URL needs to be pasted in the URL box in the shortcut and that URL box is located under the "Web Document" tab of a shortcut. You want to replace the URL that is already there.

I indicated in the instructions that you could get a shortcut for that particular article, but it really could be any shortcut.

My Computer

Dummy me. Since the link is not a file, how did I expect to be able to paste it into a folder.

I created a desktop shortcut for the URL. I then pasted it into a empty folder. I added two jpg's. I was able to open the files in Windows Live Photo Gallery (note the the "Live" distinction) and a few other viewers.

Yes, we also see that in the Microsoft thread in the post by Eridu on February 12, 2010 at 07:48:34 where there is mention of using Windows Live Photo Gallery and that not being affected by this extra long URL. That is certainly a point that needs to be kept in mind.

Also in that Microsoft thread there is some mention of certain actions in the registry changing the weird behaviour between the extra long URL and Windows Photo Gallery, which is another clue that may be of some benefit in unraveling this mystery.

And for anyone else that reads this topic I just want to stress that this isn't some urgent task that requires immediate attention and all. The solution to the problem is clear. This thread/topic is more of an academic exercise. Just a matter of curiosity. In the end, though, something might be learned that could prove useful down the road.

EDIT: I just thought of another detail that may, or may not be, of value; the unit that I first noticed the trouble on is a Japanese OS. It is also a Home Premium version.

My Computer

More information to add.

A 186-character shortcut was as close as I could get to the Microsoft limit and it didn't cause any problems. Just wanted to negate the idea I read elsewhere that a shortcut didn't have to be over the Microsoft limit to cause this trouble.

Next thing is an additional test done on another Vista unit, but full info on both units is:

A 32-bit, Vista Home Premium, SP2, and only Windows Photo Gallery is messed up by this trouble.

Likewise, a 32-bit, Vista Ultimate, SP2, and only Windows Photo Gallery is messed up by this.

My Computer

As far as I know, my Windows Photo Gallery was replaced by Windows Live Photo Gallery due to some recent changes made by Microsoft to Windows Live. Since, as you mentioned, this is an academic exercise in regards to Windows Photo Gallery, rather than the "Live" version, I can't contribute anything else to this thread.
