Windows image acquisition wakes computer

After a long trace to the root of the problem, I discovered that it is a Windows service named Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service that keeps waking up my computer (a few mins after computer is put into sleep mode or just at some other seemingly random time).

Added this info.
I use Vista 64 Home Edition , SP2.

I do use digital camera and with its software installed , but it has been installed for a long time and the waking up problem just started to happen a few days ago. The software and digital camera do not use WIA since I have disabled the service and I can still acquire images from the camera to the computer. Also, the waking up from sleep problem is now stopped because I disabled the WIA service.

....but still I would like to know what is using WIA and starting the service (event viewer does not tell me what is invoking WIA). WIA is also for scanner and such devices which I currently do not have but just in case I need WIA in the future. I also checked the Task scheduler, nothing is scheduled to wake up computer (I do not use scheduled disk defrag, create system restore point does not happen at when the waking up occurs).

I also put computer to sleep manually at random times, it wakes up after a min or several min.s later every time without fail. So I don't think it is any scheduled task (system or user) that is waking up the computer.

The problem still occurs when no applications (except firewall) are opened , so no browsers, no video player , no event viewer / task scheduler are opened, etc.

Just for imformation:

The USB keyboard is the only armed hardware device that can wake up the computer. No LAN, mouse, or TV remote control or power option in the BIOS can wake up the computer. I have tested the mouse and TV remote , they do not wake up the computer. I also disconnected the infra-red receiver for the TV remote. The computer is also powered through a surge protector. I do not have any surge problem as the computer will stay power off after power surge. The computer stays on throughout the night but just wakes up from sleep (I usually just turn off the computer at night).

I do not have any web cam.

I read that ACDSee photos viewer uses WIA but I have the same version for years and that never causes any problem.

I have used sfc -scannow to see if there is any corrupted system files, some corrupted files are found and can not be fixed but I looked at the log file , they have nothing to do with WIA.

I also used two different virus scan scanners and rootkit removers , nothing is found.

Also, I only installed some Windows updates in the past week:

They are :

Security updates:

KB2901113
KB2909921
KB2916036
KB2911502
KB2862973

.NET FRAMEWORK 4.5.1 updates

KB2898869
KB2901126

Also :
Secuirty Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Vista SP2

KB2898858 (I have to remove this one anyway because it is crashing Event Viewer and Task Scheduler, thanks Microsuck!)

I have rollbacked or reinstalled / uninstalled them individually just to find out which one is causing the problem , made no difference, the computer waking problem still exists.

Even though I am able to stop the waking up BUT I did not solve the problem as I still do not know what is invoking WIA , thus waking up the computer. Anyone want to shine some light??

Regards

You don't say if the machine is on a network. Also system specs is always helpful as you may post another thread in the future.

My Computer

System One

  • Manufacturer/Model
    HP Pavilion m9515y
    CPU
    Phenom X4 9850
    Memory
    8 GB
    Graphics Card(s)
Some Radeon Cheapie with 512 MB Ram
    Monitor(s) Displays

    Screen Resolution
    1280x1024
    Hard Drives
    750 GB SATA 3G
2 SIIG Superspeed docks w/WD Caviar Black Sata II or III
I found a half dozen pages that mention WIA and wake up issues. None have a fix. I know on my HP quad core I could look in the memory card slots and see a red LED come on every 45 seconds or so. It was polling to see if anything was in a slot. But I don't use sleep or hibernate on desktops. So I don't know what the effect would have been.

Edit: btw the machine was the one in my specs. It was running Vista 64 bit Home Premium SP1.

In the information session, I wrote no LAN , meaning no LAN wake up (magic packet , etc) , so I have a LAN card , therefore on a network. Unplugging LAN cable makes no difference.

I do have another machine on the same home network, that one uses Wi-Fi sometimes, but checking the event veiwer , task manager, I see no LAN activity. My machine only wakes the LAN card and other peripherals from sleep mode during waking up but this happens when the computer is waking up from sleep mode anyway. Once the LAN is awaken, there is no LAN actual transfer activity. WIA is not making any network connection, just waking up my computer.

There is also no sleep mode in Vista safe mode.

I do not have any new hardware installed , same setup for several years.

I don't know what spec (hardware??) you would like to know . I have the Vista 64 Home Edition SP2. Just 6G of memory , graphics card is one of those cheaper Radeon ones. Besides the digital camera (no web cam), I can't think of anything that would use WIA except ACDSee. I am wondering if anyone has an intimate knowledge of WIA which is the cause of my problem. What else is using WIA??

I have been searching for an answer online for several days , all threads with this WIA problem ended up with no solutions.
I do not have such feature on my motherboard.

System Specs page seems not in the mood to display the form. :) The glitch will be fixed soon I'm sure. :)

Windows image acquisition wakes computer

I've seen a couple other people reporting like this. I am not expert, but was always advised to check (none of which, unfortunately, ever turned out to be the cause): verify that mouse, modem, network adapter power properties are all set to 'not resume from standby'. Good luck...

Those are the first things I checked, including the BIOS wake up settings , etc. As mentioned, I tested the hardware for waking up the computer, the keyboard is the only thing that can wake up the computer. Even though I use firewall , I unplugged the network cable and it still wakes up.

If you look into the memory card slots do you see an LED light up every now and then? My bet is it is polling the slots to see if there's a card inserted. I doubt you can turn it off if that's the case. If you can narrow that down as the cause then I would post on MS someplace telling them they need to create an update that uses something other than polling to detect memory card insertion. But it might have to go to whoever wrote the disk controller driver.
