Solved Desktop - missing icons.

On my Dell 1545 laptop with Vista Home Premium, there used to be a panel across the top of the desktop with icons for the recycle bin;camera;office;video; mail; etc., and also one for IE. They have vanished in the last few days, so I must have done something incorrectly. (One thing springs to mind is that I did install a program - Decrap, and I think that may have had something to do with the problem)
Can anyone suggest how I can restore these missing items in a panel across the top of the desktop ? They seemed to be only Microsoft shortcuts, and I found them very useful.
The recycle bin was the usual picture of one; the camera one was a symbol of a camera; office - beaker with pens etc. therein; etc, etc.
Hoping someone can help me rectify matters.

Run a restore point from just before the Decrap install. If you don't have such a restore point I would get in the habit of having 4 or 5 spread out over a span of several weeks. Also look in Decrap. Maybe it has an undo function.

MilesAhead, Thanks for your reply. I do a weekly backup and restore using Macrium Reflect, and they are stored on an external drive (Seagate 1TB) I have not done such a restore with Macrium, so is it just a case of plugging in the Seagate and choosing a restore point from the list ? (I keep the last 6 restores, deleting older ones).

I may have another install of Decrap to see if there is such an 'undo' function. although I am now a bit wary of Decrap. The program was recommended by ComputerActive mag. (UK publication). I have found in the past when downloading such programs you always seem to get unwanted bits and pieces with them.

If you can find out what file the Toolbar was, Macrium lets you mount restore images to a drive letter. Then you can copy the file out. That may be an alternative to a complete image restore.

To do a complete restore you cannot run Macrium from the system disk. You need to boot the restore CD or USB with the USB external drive plugged in(I recommend complete power down, then switch on to make sure the USB is picked up.)

If you haven't made a boot CD or USB you can do it now. For WinPE disc it may have to download 300+ MB though. But for W7 the Linux based boot should work, unless you have some exotic hardware and need the Windows drivers.

Thanks, MilesAhead. I will have to sit down later today and have a good read of what you suggest.

MilesAhead, I have just visited www.forums.computeractive which is connected with the CA magazine. If you visit the site and check out Windows 7 forum you will see that there are several comments about the problems with Decrap. At the moment I am having second thoughts about re-installing Decrap to see if there is an 'undo' function.

Right. I think I would go with the approach to get the Toolbar out of the Macrium image. You need to know the filename for it.

pbcopter, A thousand million thanks. Just had a quick look at your link, and that is what I am searching to replace, after it went missing. I have saved your link and will rectify matters (hopefully) tomorrow.

MilesAhead, Thanks for your efforts. I tried booting from the Seagate external portable drive, but was not successful. It has quite a bit stored on it, so perhaps I did not wait long enough for it to 'come up' on screen. I will also have a look at what you suggest, tomorrow.

I will revisit on Monday and post the results of my efforts.

Looks like pbcoptor has it dead on. Usually you would set up restore to boot from CD or USB. I guess you could make the external USB bootable but I haven't tried that method. I just store the backup images there or on the USB stick.
