Vista 64 vs. Seven 64

Newbie here, will be buying new rig soon. This will be solely for music production, no internet. Was planning on buying W7 Pro, but I'm currently falling in love with Vista again, as I have newly installed it on new hard drive on current computer. I typically upgrade to Seven right after installing the Vista disk that came with the computer, but decided this time to reacquaint myself with Vista, after seeing some posts extolling it as possibly the last great OS MS built. Now I'm addicted to it, and want to buy Vista instead of 7 for the new computer. I know it will lose MS support in three years, but if it's never online and I use Kaspersky, I'm wondering if that would be OK? I need 64 bit so I can have more than 16 GB of RAM if I need it. (DAW users typically use 32-64 GB's of RAM). I'd need to buy it, as the Vista disk I have is only 32 bits. Any thoughts? Thank You.

Go with Windows 7 Pro X64. I agree Vista is a decent OS once it's fully patched but it does not work as well as Windows 7.

That's my $.02 worth :D

Thanks for the input. My experience with 7 has been with Home Premium. Hopefully Pro will be worth the money. I'll probably take your advice. But I'll enjoy having Vista on my internet computer for years to come.

I don't know which is the better Operating System, but I definitely love the visuals on Vista. And I hear the security is better.

Windows 7 is a more capable and secure OS than Vista. You need a compelling reason to chose Vista over Windows 7. The only place you will be able to buy Vista is on eBay or some similar source, with all the risks inherent in that.

Thanks for the reply. So you're saying I should only buy Windows direct from Microsoft? Or go to Best Buy?

My Computer

Microsoft doesn't sell Windows 7 or Vista anymore. Windows 7 can be obtained from some dealers and on-line outlets. For Vista you are pretty much limited to used copies. Some of these are pirated or have invalid keys.

Thanks for the great information, I really appreciate it. I'm planning on buying a barebones from Magic Micro, and I'm assuming their version of 7 is authentic. Especially if it comes installed.

My Computer

This not a comment on the seller, I do not know them. Do not assume, however, that installed means valid. If it was not installed with a key or an invalid key, you will get notices in a few days. Then the notices turn into loss of functionality, until you have a worthless OS>

So, there's no way to be sure of getting a valid copy of Windows 7? I may be forced to go with 8 then. I guess I could live with it, since that computer won't be online, and all I'll be using it for is music creation. All I have to do is open up Sonar and get to work. I don't need to piddle around with all the bloatware. If 8 can let me do that, I have no problem with it.

My Computer

If you buy from a legit company, you should not have a problem. You would not buy from ebay, many bad key numbers have been bought there, for example, or from a guy on the corner etc.
Let me see if I can find a definitely good source for you.
Where are you located?

OK
In the USA there are many big chain stores, where you can buy 7. Just be sure that it comes in the sealed package and the number is not visible from the outside.
You can try Walmart
Newegg etc. You will not get a big discount, but you get what you pay for.
Stay away form the big discounts, the key number may be used.

.

That's not entirely correct. If Microsoft detects that a key has been used on too many systems they can invalidate the key and after that it will no longer activate automatically. Also the activation support people might or might not help with manual activation.

I did find some copies on amazon but they are by private sellers. When you buy from a private seller either by amazon or ebay you have to be careful as stated because you could end up with a pirated copy. If anything I would look for a high rated store over a average Joe in order to avoid that. Either way you take a risk.
