Solved Upgrading XP to Vista

Hi there,

A friend of mine would like to upgrade his XP machine(s) to Vista (or W7), which I know very little about upgrading. I do have a Vista Home Premium (SP1) upgrade disc that is not in use and just lying around collecting dust that he could have though I see no Product ID anywhere on the packaging. He will need that won't he, meaning the XP product key is OS specific, correct??

Also, I know that you can use the W7 upgrade adviser to find out if your hardware is compatible for Vista to W7, but can that be used on an XP to see if the hardware is compatible to upgrade to Vista??

Thank you,
Donna :)

The DVD would be basically worthless without the product key number
You can test the computer hardware regardless of the OS that is on it now.

Hi Rich,

Yeah. That's what I thought. Not sure about his hardware, so I'll have him test it. Could turn out that the machines are unable to be upgraded at all and new ones may have to replace the old ones.

Thank you for your time,
Donna :)
